Aaaaggghhh... thanks to RoadRunner (which was not communicating with my computer during the past 24 hours), I missed your birthday, Sus! I am sorry about that, but better late than never, as they say.

Thank you all so much for the Birthday wishes! It was a very pleasant surprise to find this thread. I've been sick, (sore throat, exhaustion, etc...) for about a month and a half now, so this has been a definite pick me up. I'm going to the doctor tommorrow(again) for a Mononucleosis test. Fun stuff. At any rate, between this and getting in a few games of euchre with my 86 year old grandpa today I've had an excellent 27th birthday. Thanks again to all of you.
Good to see out and about on the boards again Rich, there's a whole gang of Mohicanites out here pulling for you. In the long run I'm sure you'll come out of this a stronger, smarter, braver New Frontiersman than you already are. You've touched and improved the quality of life for more people than you give yourself credit for. Take care and see you around the boards. |

Ooooh! That certainly does sound like it could be mono you have there, Sus. I went through that with my daughter when she was a Junior in High School. Not fun at all. She was so sick. Missed about 3 weeks of school, lost 10 pounds that she could not spare, and had Mom running around back and forth to Dr. appointments, school to get homework assignments, buying her Burger King milk shakes to get her to eat something... anything...etc. Whew. Not fun.
Anyway, glad your 27th was good in spite of not feeling well. Aren't Grandpas fun? |

My daughter got mono at the Southern Clay Court Tournament when she was 16. She would feel fine in the morning, then after two or three games, she would be so exhausted she would have to default. The doctor said it was triggered by something else that weakens the immune system, like a virus. She was out of everything for over a month, and it was three months before she was able to finish a match. A year later she was still feeling the effects. The doctor did say it was a teenage disease. It would be unusual for someone 27 to contract it. But not impossible. You had better get checked.
Oh, and the high school quarterback got it one time, during football season, and tried to continue playing anyway. He ended up in the hospital with liver damage and was out of all sports for years.

Doc says I tested positive for Strep, non type-A. It should get better on it's own, at some point. They can't do anti-biotics for it. Anyone have any good soup recipes? I've had this for a month and a half and it's getting old. |

Susquesus, I know how you feel......almost. I have had a nasty virus for the past couple of weeks, and my throat has hurt me so bad, and I coughed day and night!!! I stayed in bed for a week because I just didn't have any energy. All my doctor could tell me was that it was either a virus or allergies. I knew that it wasn't allergies, but he sent me home with some cough medicine, and told me that if I didn't feel any better in a few days to let him know. I gradually got worse. I could hardly even talk, so I called my doctor back three days after my visit to him and told him that I felt worse than the day that I saw him. He called my drug store for a prescription of antibiotics, and that was a lifesaver!!! Within a couple of days, I was feeling so much better. I'm still not completely well, but I'm not going to complain because at least I am out of bed and able to do my usual routine again. Besides, I had to get well. My husband and I are taking off for a little vacation in Florida next week, and he said that if I wasn't any better, then we would have to cancel, and I have been looking forward to this vacation too much to let some nasty virus spoil it for me. Wish that I could help you with the soup recipes, but I just open up a can of Cambell's chicken and rice. When I'm sick, I don't even want to think about cooking, so it is much better for me to get soup out of a can. I have also been eating alot of popsicles. That just seems to be the only thing that would soothe my throat for a little while. Why can't they give you antibiotics? Is it just that they don't work for strep throat or what? I hope that I never get strep, because it is miserable having a sore throat that length of time!!! I hope that you feel better soon!!!!

I can feel your pain guys! I had a virus in May, didn't go to doc until too late (of course not...I'm a medical professional, why would *I* go to a doctor) and had various degrees of pneumonia all of June. Much better know...FINALLY!
I do, however, have a MAHvelous soup recipe for ya (courtesy of the FoodNetwork's Rachel Ray - I just LOVE her!)
MINI MEATBALL SOUP (with my own notes...I omitted items in red...it was STILL terrific)
Image Insert:
5.18 KB
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan in a slow stream 2 carrots, peeled and chopped 2 ribs celery, chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 2 bay leaves, fresh or dried Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 pound ground beef, pork and veal combined 1 egg, beaten 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano or Romano, a couple of handfuls (the real stuff - KEY ingredient) 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs, a couple of handfuls 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated or ground nutmeg 6 cups chicken stock or broth 2 cups water 1 1/2 cups dried pasta, rings, broken fettuccini or ditalini (something tha will hold a little liquid in it - orechiette or those swirly things) 1 pound triple washed fresh spinach, coarsely chopped (use baby spinach - no need to pick out stems) Grilled 4 Cheese Sandwiches, recipe follows
In a deep pot over medium heat add oil, chopped carrots, celery and onions and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper. Cover pot and cook veggies 5 or 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. While the veggies cook, combine meat, egg, garlic, grated cheese, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, nutmeg. Uncover your soup pot and add broth and water to the pot. Increase heat to high and bring soup to a boil. When soup boils, reduce heat a bit and start to roll meat mixture into small balls, dropping them straight into the pot. You are making meat dumplings that will cook in the broth. When you are done rolling the meat, add pasta to the soup and stir. Cover and simmer soup 10 minutes. When pasta is tender, stir in chopped spinach in batches. When spinach has wilted into the soup, the soup is done and ready to serve. Adjust your seasonings. Serve soup with crusty bread or grilled 4 cheese sandwiches.
Grilled 4 Cheese Sandwiches (I'm sure plain ole American cheese ones would be just as yummy with the soup)
Recipe courtesy Rachael Ray 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan 3 tablespoons butter 1 clove garlic, cracked away from skin 8 slices crusty Italian semolina bread 1 cup shredded provolone 1 cup shredded mozzarella 1/2 cup grated Parmesan or Romano 1 cup shredded Asiago * All of these cheeses are available in specialty cheese case and dairy aisle already shredded
In a small skillet over medium low heat, combine oil, butter and garlic. Cook garlic in butter and oil gently for 2 or 3 minutes. Remove garlic butter mixture from heat. Place a large nonstick skillet on the stove over medium high heat. Using a pastry brush, brush 1 side of 4 slices of bread with garlic oil and place buttered side down in skillet. Top each slice with equal amounts of the 4 cheeses, distributing them equally over the 4 slices. Top each sandwich with another slice of bread brushed with garlic butter, buttered side up. Flip the grill cheese sandwiches a few times until cheeses are melted and gooey and bread is toasty and golden. Cut grilled 4 cheese sandwiches from corner to corner and serve.

Ooh-la-la GG! That sounds like food to cure any ill. Thanks for the hot recipes, they will be put to good use. I've also been thinking of split pea and ham soup, complete with ham bone and several hours of simmering. Being sick isn't so bad if you've got good food to keep you going. |
