What made Number 4 unusual?
.
That it was the edge of the woods? Yes, but....
.
That it was the only town where the fortification was not taken over by the (so called) enemy? True, but....
That it was the lone frontier town not burned to the ground in the winter of 1746-1747? Well, that and;
.
Number 4 had an unusual relationship with the local peoples.... Let us tell you more this weekend at Old Number 4

Well - I did go to the Fort today & was a tad disappointed ... but still enjoyed conversations with three of four Abanaki there. I thought it was going to be a presentation of that time frame from the Abanaki point of view. - Having said that the "chats with the Abanaki involved" was good. - Somewhat of a small turnout today - but I was told that Saturday it was pretty busy. One of the Abanaki was a chief (small group) & quite talkative to say the least - pretty big guy too. Weather was fantastic - 70's & no humidity. - There are a few more pics - but the interior lighting was a problem.

| I would like to see that fort. Saturday was to be an event for us at a local site, but the temps were close to 100 and almost no one came. Shame because the site had prepared a lot of thing for the kids. The 70's sound nice! |

Unfortunately Fitz, it needs quite a bit of work, a new roof in many places. It doesn't get the number of visitors many places seem to. - Charlestown N.H. is NOT a "tourist trap" that provides the foot traffic it needs. - I do sent them a few bucks every so often for the roof ... that's kept as a separate fund & not used for routine maintenance. - Having said that I like the place. - Some locals are trying to get some help from the state - since it "represents" an historic site. - The original fort (long gone) was located almost a mile from this one & is private land today. - This one has GREAT potential with more traffic & re-enactments. ... I think more "big time" re-enactments would provide the traffic - but we're "quite a distance" for most groups to make the trip.

Chief Roger Longtoe says the Fort at No. 4 was ONLY on "the whites frontier" ... certainly not theirs. They (the Abanaki) had been living here for many, many generations. ... There were plans for another Fort further north - but it was never built.

He also said while it had nothing to do with the Abanaki, - most whites think Daniel Boone was a great hunter & trapper. - Boone wasn't, he was nothing but a damn poacher. He took game that was not his to take. |

I seem to remember that years ago, maybe around 2009 or so, the man who was head of Fort Ti left there and became head of Fort at No. 4. I can't remember his name. I wonder what became of that. I hear a little from the Pequawket Alliance from time to time, but nothing about him. Probably he has moved on. Without a steady flow of money it is very difficult for a site to make it. The next county over from where I live was the site of a F&I fort, Fort Prince George. The original site is under Lake Keowee. The county has been saying for years that they want to rebuild the fort on a piece of land adjacent to the lake, and that they can secure the funding. But I keep asking them, how are you going to fund the site year after year. I have never gotten a good answer.
The first year I attended a Mohican Gathering there was a shoot at the French Broad Muzzleloader's range. I won second prize which was a wampum belt made by the Abenaki nation craftspeople. A repro, of course, not using shell wampum, but a great prize. I still have it.
