https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6510681/Expose-claims-Facebook-allowed-Netflix-Spotify-Amazon-access-users-private-information.html . 1. - NY Times expose revealed Facebook granted access to hundreds of millions of users' data to 150 companies . 2. - Netflix, Spotify, Royal Bank of Canada could read, write, and delete Facebook users' private messages . 3. - Sony, Microsoft, and Amazon could all obtain users' email addresses through their friends as recently as last year . 4. - Facebook gave companies this access even if its users had disabled all data sharing on their profile . When he stood before Congress in April, following yet another scandal at Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg declared 'We don't sell data to anyone'.
That may technically be the case, but a new New York Times expose has revealed that Facebook gave 150 companies access to hundreds of millions of users' data without their knowledge or consent.
Records obtained by the Times reveal that the amount of data Cambridge Analytica received from a Facebook app paled in comparison to the access that was granted to the social media giant's biggest partners, including Amazon, Spotify, and Netflix.
Facebook gave Netflix, Spotify, and the Royal Bank of Canada the ability to read, write, and delete Facebook users' private messages and to see all participants on a thread, according to the internal records.

I have always made it a practice to never post anything on Facebook I would not say on camera to a news reporter. All my "profile" is blank and my email address is one I created especially for this purpose using a rented server. And at my age, I am not looking for a job. I never post anything political, and most of what I post has to do with the 18th century. The rest is largely smart-assed comments. I realize this is not the case for most people. I do find the sharing of info to be of a lot of value to me. But, again, the sharing is all 18th century. Unless it is 17th century. I will argue over which king is better, George II or Louis XV. |

If people find a need for Facebook - they should use it like you do. ... Facebook leads to a HUGE number of home break-ins/thefts. - Folks on vacation show a pic of themselves having a great time somewhere & then give out how long they're gonna be away. - Guess who's house get broken into???. |

That's something I try to avoid. Like saying that I "might" own a gun, or be on vacation (unless someone else is at the house at the time). So many don't. But there is something called Face Book Purity which is an add-on to the most popular Windows 10 browsers. It allows you to selectively block a lot of content that you do not want to see. I like it. The reason I joined Facebook to begin with was that a watch company I like was having a raffle and to enter you had to like them on Facebook. So I did. But I didn't win. But about that time a lot of the message boards I looked at, like this one, began to dry up and seemed to migrate to Facebook. Like recently, where a Meet-up Group of which I am a member (French language, of course) found that the host wanted to start charging a fee, not only for the site, but for the individual members to join. So they went to Facebook instead. It has it's benefits, but so many people use it for what seems to fulfill their own social needs. |
