This event brought back all the reasons I switched parties several years ago. On the one side, Republican, we heard reasoned arguments and ideas that centered on Constitutional principles and fiscal responsibility. On the other, Democrat, we heard little more than sob stories and witnessed the process of obstructionism ... right there before our eyes. Obama was disgraceful, condescending, unsure.

I was never more proud to call myself a Republican [more accurately, Conservative]. Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, and the rest ... Thank you! No matter what happens from here on out - and I fear it won't be good, due to the Democratic hierarchy's "we don't care" attitude - THANK YOU!!

PAUL RYAN: This is a Ponzi scheme that would make Bernie Madoff proud. When you take a look at the Medicare cuts, what this bill essentially does, is it treats Medicare like a piggy bank. It raids a half a trillion dollars out of Medicare not to shore up Medicare solvency but to spend on this new government program. When you strip out the double counting and what I would call these "gimmicks," the full ten-year cost of this bill has a $460 billion deficit. The second ten-year cost of this bill has a $1.4 trillion deficit. Hiding spending does not reduce spending, and so when you take a look at all this it just doesn't add up ... We've been talking about how much we agree on different issues, but there really is a difference between us, and it's basically this: We don't think the government should be in control of all of this; we want people to be in control -- and that, at the end of the day, is the big difference. We are all representatives of the American people. We all do town hall meetings, we all talk to our constituents, and I've gotta tell you: The American people are engaged. And if you think they want a government takeover of health care, I would respectfully submit you're not listening to them.

I REALLY understand where you're coming from Rich, trust me. I DO NOT want the government running GM, the banks, health care or any other industry/business. That's NOT what our government is for. - Having said that, I'm probably the only conservative in the country that doesn't have ANY problem with health co-ops. As long as they're privately run. ... IMO, there's nothing more American that folks getting together/uniting to solve a problem. There's NO law or rule that says health care HAS TO BE a "for profit" enterprise. I have absolutely no problem with anyone or company making a profit. - Health care today is damn expensive, and Uncle Sam isn't the solution, - but folks saving/taking a few bucks off the top and stepping in on their own sounds like a good idea.

I agree about the health co-op's MG. We've got them all over MN and people love them, they really seem to work.

Interesting & good comment from a U.S. poster on the BBC concerning this.
.
7. At 1:09pm on 26 Feb 2010, Richard wrote:

A perspective from the East Side of the Pond:

I know of no one who would not wish eveyone
to have decent and adequate health care. That
being said, the current (3) health care bills/
approaches have significant issues.

The projected costs are out of line with the
benefit. It has been projected that some 30%
of Americans have no health care insurance.
Also, only the top 50% of Americans pay federal
income taxes. The costs of the "offerings"
have estimated to approach/exceed one trillion
dollars.

The "American way" does not lend itself to
government control of basically anything excluding
defense (see our Constitution). We do not
desire to have our medical information "shared"
nor adjudicated by government officials.

The bills were written "behind closed doors" with
little (if no) coordination with those who may
have different/better ideas.

The latest surveys indicate that a significant
majority of Americans do not want government
controlled health care. Seems to me that the
"majority" should not be shuffled off to the side.

Americans have large issues with "special deals"
being offered to secure votes on the issue; Unions
being exempted from certain taxes, 300 million
US dollars being offered to ONE state to secure
ONE vote - the list is long.

As the federal government has not been able to
demonstrate fiscal responsibility on anything,
to relinquish 17% of our economy to the control
of the federal government seems a bit unreasonable.

Enough for now - you, I believe, can get the point.

Unlike some people here, I will be the first to admit when I was wrong. While watching President Obama's conduct during the health care 'summit', I realized that I was wrong about what I thought of him. No, it isn't his policies or his ideology, for I still find both of them offensive and anti-American, this has to do more with the man himself.

In the begining, I noted here that even though I disagreed with him politically, I still thought that he was a decent guy on a personal level; well, I was wrong. After witnessing his interactions with Sen. McCain and other GOP legislators during the summit, I am now convinced that Barrack Hussein Obama (AKA- Barry Sotero) is nothing more than a narcisstic, petulant, marxist man-child.

...I stand corrected

I don't intend to hijack this thread, but just wanted to say: Seamus, the quote that precedes your name is a great philosophy of life, and you've come closer to fulfilling it than anyone I know. (And how 'bout those Lobos? #8 in the country!)

This wonderful quote is attributed to an octogenarian named Mavis Leyrer, of
Seattle (just found that out). I can take no credit for it......got it on an email from a friend and I liked it, as that is something I totally agree with!

Vayan Lobos!

Now, back to the topic! I am not sure the sponsor(s) of that terrific billboard have been ID'd yet, for certain.

I love how congrssional Democrats blame the delays on Republican 'obstructionists'; failing to note that they didn't even need GOP support for this bill, when the process started last year. The fact of the matter is that this is ill-conceived, unnecessary and unconstitutional legislation (it was just as guilty in the 1990's version), and a few of the Democrats in congress are aware of this as well.

Well Sachem, at least I can proudly say that the Democrats 'own' this monstrosity exclusively. And if this bill does pass to become law, then those of us on the Right should make sure that the Marxi-crats all hang for it as well...

And if it is such a 'Great Bill', then why does congress exempt themselves from it?

Why does this 'masterpiece' of legislation require a parallel bill to fix it?

If its quick passage was so critical, then why does it not take 'full effect' until 2014?

And if this bill is designed to be 'deficit neutral', then why does it take ten years of payments to provide six years of funding?

Where is it said that members of Congress are exempt, Sarge? The legislation is intended to provide affordable coverage for people who don't get it through an employer and can't afford it on their own. You and I aren't in that category, nor are members of Congress, but I wouldn't describe our situation as being "exempt."
