What a shame it took so long...........

Amen! Believe it or not, I sat down at the computer to post this very story, from a different source. Yours is better! |

I can believe it, Mary......it is a great story that is way too long in surfacing. To think, I was in the presence of these men when I was in Navajo country for a couple of years and never had an inkling! They are remarkable people!! God bless them all.......... |

I've also read on the Navajo Nation website (www.navajo.org) that the Code Talkers provided the posting of colors before Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar's opening remarks at the recent White House tribal nations conference. So good to see these acts of recognition taking place.
BTW, I started a thread entitled "A Navajo Code Talker Passes On" in the Inside the Longhouse forum awhile ago, but that forum doesn't seem to get too much attention. An obituary for one of the Code Talkers even provided his "born to/born for" information, which this devoted reader of Tony Hillerman found very interesting. I sure hope all of the surviving Code Talkers have been given the opportunity to tell their stories in a form that will preserve them for posterity.
Seamus, did you visit the Navajo Nation while you were at UNM? As much as I'd like to make a side trip to the Four Corners region during my trip to Santa Fe next year, those are some long distances we're talking about down there. |

Yes, I did. I had several friends from the Nation, and was honored to be included in some gatherings (like the Southwestern Pow Wow at UNM in '61 and '62,) and invitations to their homes. My next door neighbor in my dorm, Frankie Marianito, was Navajo, and he took me to the gatherings. Those were experiences I really enjoyed, but, being young and stupid at the time, I did not fully appreciate what it was and what I was experiencing until much later. I cherish those visits and the many friends I made there. It was an interesting dynamic to be a little Anglo boy from Pennsylvania and to be accepted as I was by Frankie and his people. It taught me valuable lessons I remember to this day.
I was saddened to find this:

There is a Code Talker with the same name, but it is not his father, perhaps an uncle, but I cannot track that possibility. Here is a roster for your perusal:

Patriotism is very strong in that corner of the world, as illustrated by the following letter to the editor:

P.S. Not all of the names on the list are Navajo; Lori Piestewa was Hopi. |

Wasn't Lori Piestewa, one of the National Guard soldiers killed from the same convoy when Jessica Lynch was captured? |
