Raccoons are tough critters, - but ganging up??? . LAKELAND, Fla. A 74-year-old Lakeland woman was hospitalized after being mauled by a pack of raccoons she tried to shoo from her yard.
Gretchen Whitted fell when five raccoons surrounded and attacked, suffering extensive cuts from her neck to her legs.
"We're not talking about a lot of little bites here," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "She was filleted."
A neighbor called for help after hearing the woman's cries and seeing her covered in blood.
Whitted received dozens of staples and sutures and was treated for rabies, though officials doubt the animals were infected.
Fire crews flooded nearby drains where some of the animals escaped, but none turned up. Animal Control officers hope to catch them in traps baited with wet cat food and sardines.

Ha! Those coons are tough little critters- and smart. One time when I was camping I woke up to a coon that had opened a cooler pulled the carton of eggs out and broke them one at a time and ate them. |

This is just awful. That poor woman who would think that racoons would attack people. No wonder parents with small children are worried as this is a "gang" of viscious coons. I hope they catch them in the traps they set sooner rather than later. Those PETA folks best keep their traps shut on this one as these little devils deserve to die. |

Back when I lived in Maine, - I shot one on my deck one night with a BB gun. All it did was grab the spot and kinda stare at me, - sorta po'd. So I said don't move I'll be right back, - with "something else" - it was gone when I got back. Truth is - it was one large & tough sob. |

We used to have some raccoons that lived behind our house. The mother would march up to the porch with the babies in a line behind her. You could always tell when she had been there because they always washed the cat's food in the water bowl before they ate it. Then one night one fell out of a tree onto the roof of the porch. It was mad and you should have seen it's teeth! After that, no more "cute" raccoons for us. We made sure they couldn't get to the cat's food and they left.
MG, next time try a 800fps air rifle. |

That is really scarey! I have never heard of them being that aggressive and vicious before. Wow.
I haven't had any raccoons up on my porch to dine on cat food... yet. I have, however, had skunks. Several years back, my daughter came home late one evening, came up the steps onto the porch (which is a very large, covered one), glanced over at the "cat" that was eating out of Silo's bowl. She stopped dead in her tracks when she realized the pretty white stripes didn't belong to a cat. They stood and stared at each other for a moment, then she very slowly and carefully backed her way off the porch, down the steps, down the front walk, and well away. He decided it was probably time to leave.
Fairly recently, I stepped out onto the porch to let my dog out and nearly stepped on a 'possum that was dining at the bowl. The dog never even looked at it, thankfully, and went on down the steps to do her business. The 'possum waddled over to the far corner of the porch, went through the railing and perched on the edge. I went back into the house and got my broom. I went back out and shoved the broom through the railing at the 'possum and knocked him off the porch. I almost... but not quite... felt bad, because it's about a 3 foot drop. But, he got up and waddled away into the neighbor's yard. Haven't seen him since. |

We had possums come after the cat food, too. But you could tell afterward if it was a possum or a raccoon. The possums made a mess, but the raccoons were very tidy. That's why we liked them. And the fact that they were cute, with all the little babies following in a row. |
