Gathering 2004 ... it is hard to beat this stuff. I am so sorry those of you who had wanted to come, but didn't, were unable to. It was a good one. Aren't they all?
Right now, Gatherers are disbursed, or disbursing, to the far corners of this land ... and beyond ... but amidst talk of logos, and incorporating, and tax-exempt charities; in-between all those darn raindrops [actually, as I've said elsewhere, it wasn't all that bad considering the forecasts]; within all the disparate personalties ... another memorable Mohican Gathering was born. And it certainly wouldn't be surprising to me if this was NOT the last Great Mohican Gathering. There is still energy & creativity there to create.
My Gathering experience was a bittersweet one, to use the words of a great Gathering buddy, Jo. For some different reasons, but also for some that were similar. For that reason, and because it was a long Gathering - an ala Carte Gathering [not once were all 60+ people together in one place at one time] - my web site recounting will hope to depend, more than is the norm, on other Gatherers' accounts and images. So, 2004 Gatherers ... bring 'em on, just as soon as you can.
C'mon Jayne! It was only 7 Days long! Chef extraordinarie, Dale, watches on at Ariel's "Cabin"!
Of course, much more will be added to the web site's Gathering Pages in the near future ... words & pictures ... but, you can follow a bit of the daily progress here: The 2004 Mohican Gathering - Briefly: Day By Day.
For now, I want to just run by you all a few things ...
Except for Massacre Valley & Cameron's Cabin, I think every scene in the film was visited by at least a few Gatherers ... one group even splintered off to see Webb's HQs in Albany. It was fantastic to spend such a long time among you. No finer group exists than that that assembles here in Mohicanland each June [almost]. I am so very proud to be one of you.
Scottie Willis [hair department, see: Hair Gallery] dropped in a couple of times; Eric Hurley was there; Russell Means; Mike A. Williams; a Marion Real Estate person even tracked us down on the Linville Gorge day - his vision is to rebuild Fort William Henry in its original location overlooking Lake James!
There is a varied and loosely connected story to be told about this Gathering. As soon as I can get my thoughts together and hear from others who were there, it will be ...
I am proud to say that I won first prize in the 50 yard shooting contest, using the rifle bought for me by Mohicanlanders. 
Those of you who helped put this shindig together ... there is not enough thanks I can muster to adequately express my gratitude ... I mean, there was some serious coordination and work to do ... Diana with the Pig Roast - BIG job! ... Jayne with Ariel's Auction ... Cherie with the raffles ... Ann did a wonderful job, as always, putting the Spirits & French Broad events together ... Steph put a completely new day together splendidly at Cherokee ... Marc arranged CRP ... oh, and that Program Guide - by Mary G., Sarah Z., and Jo - the best - by far - ever! Marvelous job on that! ... Eric & Sharon with the T-shirts ... and all the helpers ... Dale, Karen W., Patrick, Theresa, Kay, etc. etc. EVERYBODY did their part and a full seven days went off with nary a glitch. Not a bad showing.
Bookworm - your contributions the the auction/raffle were greatly appreciated. You were missed. WW - same to you. Tim Cordell - missed, as well, but he came through with a Russell Means portrait to present to him.
Ah ... there's much more to say ... it will be. Till then ... I love you all!

| Congrats on your 1st prize Rich! Wondered how you'd do. Based on your performance at the "almost-gathering" - two shots in same hole -it comes as no surprise. Clearly it was the rifleman, not the rifle itself! Congrats! I thought you might do well, but it's fitting you did, and happy it is for me to hear of it! |

Why, I was just smacking my lips together over the yummy-tasting Secret Recipe sauce made by Dale! Soooo very good! 
We were having a GREAT day and enjoying ourselves IMMENSELY!  And Bill, there ARE pictures out there of Rich takin' those shots. I'm sure they'll be appearin' here soon! He made a mighty fine figure in those trekking duds!

| Well Stephanie dear, I think my problem stems from growing up in Pennsy Dutch country. I grew up surrounded by folks who said things like "Throw Papa downstairs his hat" or "Too soon old, too late smart". Every once in a while that kinda sentence structure seems to sneak in somehow. |

Hi All:
Well, I am certainly glad I found my way out of the western wilderness along with Ching and his wife. It was super seeing you all again and meeting some new Mohicanites. Just wish I could have spent more time with you all, but had to take care of our guests. Russell and Pearl had a great time and asked me to say thanks again for the invitation and all the wonderful comraderie. They talked about all "the wonderful folks" they met, all the way to the airport in Charlotte.
We spent one day in Asheville, where Russell took Pearl and me around to all the places that were used by the cast and crew. We got to see the factory where all the costumes were sewn, the hotel where many stayed, little restaurants that they ate in, and all the while Russell told us more and more stories about the events happening during the movie. What a treat.
I shall put my thoughts together and do more musing later.

It was great meeting you both. Until your arrival, I think I have been the only person to wear Indian regalia. It was super seeing you in Cherokee dress. Hope to see you again at the next Gathering. I'll forward that info on Cherokee Holiday in September, too.

It was good to see you, too, Ros. Thank you for playing hostess to our guests. What a treat it was to not only have them at the movie but to mingle among us at the Mohican Games on Saturday.
Perhaps next time you and Pearl will have that watermelon spitting down pat! That was so much fun and you guys were quite the entertainment. I was telling Claude about it and it seems he has a totally different technique than I, so next time maybe he'll instruct.

It was great meeting you both!
Ros, so sorry I missed you on Saturday. I had to leave before you arrived. I feel like I didn't get to see you at all, but it sounds like you had quite an adventcha with Ching & Pearl in Asheville. I hope you remembered where all those spots are and will share them! Even though I live in Asheville, while the movie was being filmed I was working full-time 3rd shift and finishing my thesis for college. So basically I was clueless about what was going on around town! SO if you can share some of those stories, I'm sure lots of us would love to hear them. Thanks for all your hard work!
By the way Ros, you and Lady Ann need to compare notes. She had some cool Indian regalia as well, but she might not have been wearing it on the days you were with us. You all looked awesome in the pic from Saturday though!

Ros, Thanks so much for taking Russell & Pearl under your wing! We sure enjoyed having them, and Russell was fascinating to hear on Friday night. I've already visited his website and intend to do more reading there when I have the chance. Great to see you - look forward to next time. I'll be watching for those stories you heard.
To the Dels - you're a great father/son duo! Enjoyed meeting you. My sister Karen W. and I will be in touch re the research Cherokee ancestry. We've talked about doing it for several years. Now we feel a renewed energy to get moving on it!

| Steph: back when I was a kid, there was more of that kind of talk from the old Pennsylvania German folks than you find in Allentown Bethlehem area these days. Some of the Pa Dutch farmer folk still talk that way, but less and less over time with each new generation. I think it comes from German sentence structure. |

Bill R is correct, it has alot to do with the syntax of German translated to English. You will find people making similar faux pas in my hometown of Pittsburgh. This is once again due to the syntax of certain European Languages, when translated to English. If you were a Pittsburgher, then you would think that your method of speech was normal, "and its 'em other folks that need to 'red-up their talkin, and that."
Us Pittsburghers are infamous for our butchering of the English Language, here you will find sentences that end in prepositions, as well as words that you never will hear anywhere else. When HRH The Prince of Wales visted Pittsburgh in 1987, local talk show hosts joked that an 'international incident' might occur when Prince Charles heard what was done to his language.

Sgt. Munro, I enjoy your description of Pittsburgh dialect. BOTH sides of my family hail from the Pittsburgh area (most are still there, in fact) and I am VERY familiar with the colorful dialect and syntax. Pittsburgh has its own vocabulary too -- be assured I was the ONLY kid in a Columbia, S.C. Catholic school referring to rubber bands as "gumbands" and telling a nosey person they were "nebby!"
(to translate what Sgt. Munro wrote about "and its 'em other folks that need to 'red-up their talkin, and that." the translation would be "It's other people who need to clean up their language!_"
However I don't think Pittsburgh-ese is "butchering" English...it's just a VERY colorful way of talking. Some scholars think it's one of the most distinct speech patterns in the country outside of some of those used here in the Southeast! Want some entertaining perspective on Pittsburgh talk?

I had to laugh at myself, after typing that post. The 'gumband' reference reminded me of the first time I asked for a 'pop'(What most other folks call a soda) at the Ft. Benning EM Club. The gentleman behind the bar looked quizically at me and asked, "Do you want me to hit you once, or twice?" The years spent in the armed forces helped to break me of alot of my local 'color', but when I am back in the old neighborhood I have a tendency to regress when in the company of my childhood buddies.
