This is very hard for me to believe! I never would have thunk it. Not in the proverbial million years!
Some silly idea I had after watching a movie back in April 1993 has run its initial course. Finally printed in July 1997 [we took advance orders from April '97 till that point], we are now out. Almost! One measly copy remains for public sale. That makes me happy and sad, together, at the same time. What a roller coaster ride it has been. And all because we wanted to sell a little, colorful, booklet.
John Evans - Gatherer at the first 3, and signed up for 2004 - was the very first purchaser. Then came Mary Long [Doc Mary now!]. Then, Emily McGowan - 2-time Gatherer .... the list kept going, much to my continued amazement! As we speak, John Nader, of Charlottesville, Virginia is the last customer. I don't know him. Inbetween the two "Johns," many, many hundreds of this little booklet were sold - some to many of you; some to many I do not know at all. In all that time, I do not recall one bad check, maybe one chargeback on a credit card, two returns [both had missing pages], virtually no complaints, many praises. Made a lot of folks happy, including me!
All 50 States have at least one copy of On the Trail of the Last of the Mohicans floating around somewhere within their borders. North Carolina has the most, followed by New York. And, that makes perfect sense! The movie was filmed in North Carolina and the historical events took place in New York! How very appropriate! The heaviest sales, if one were to draw it out on a map, would look much like a war club ... maybe Chingachgook's. The handle, beginning in the southeast states, and running up the spine of the Appalachian Mountains, then curving to the Old Northwest area - the Ohio Country forming the striking end of the club [special mention to Ohio & Indiana!]. California, too, I guess from its sheer numbers, also bought a lot of books. The Plains States probably have the fewest. In addition, many copies left the country - going to Canada, Mexico, a few South American Countries, much of Europe [particularly Great Britain, France, Germany, Holland], Asia [most notably Japan], Australia, and even a couple to Africa. US military bases around the world also have a bunch of copies laying around!
What astounds me the most is that the book still sells at the same frequency it did back in '97. Interest doesn't wane!
I gave away a lot of copies to family & those involved in the filming, and have 10 copies in storage for my kids, as well as a few more saved for some use not yet determined - raffles, or something. But, other than that, one copy sits, all alone, in a box, waiting for a new home. Then ... no more ...
A perfect time to end the ride. Right?
NAH! I'm not ready for that yet!
So, The Expanded Edition of On the Trail of the Last of the Mohicans looms on the horizon ... factors beyond my control, not the least of which is the Christmas madness at the Post Office [some days, I don't even come home for lunch] ... have caused me to put it temporarily aside. But, it will be here in the not-too-distant-future. Not yet, but soon, we will be taking advance orders on this one, ala 1997. Then, we'll see "Which Way The Trail Goes" ...
"Sneak Previews" at Author's Expanded Edition and the abridged PDF Version.
Notice of impending release - and advance orders - will be given soon.
Thank you all for your support through the years! Like I said, what a ride!!
Elsewhere, not much going on - waiting on several contributions, but I imagine others are in the same Christmas mode I'm in and not much is a-happenin'.
Will be updating the web site in a little while to reflect minor Gathering changes, etc., but that's a bout it for now. Meanwhile, have you seen topi

This is a testimony, in part, to the quality of the book itself. But it also speaks to the enduring appeal of the movie. It is becoming a classic, along with Cooper's book.
Congratulations, Rich and Elaine! Job well done!
BTW... can you tell us how many copies were originally printed? |

Oh, absolutely, WW ... much more than the quality, or lack of, of the book [after all, folks don't really see it till it's in their hands!] is the enduring nature of the book [the novel] and, especially, the film. No doubt in my mind that's the primary factor.
1,000 copies were printed. Sold 'em all through a web site page. Had we distributed elsewhere ... who knows what might have happened!? |

Going ... going ... gone ... to Rebecca Snow, a young lady up in Ontario, Canada.
The last copy of On the Trail of the Last of the Mohicans is no more. Feels mighty strange - empty, actually - from this end ...
