"A lady came up to me on the street and pointed at my suede jacket. 'You know a cow was murdered for that jacket?', she sneered. I replied in a psychotic tone, 'I didn't know there were any witnesses. Now I'll have to kill you too.'" Jake Johansen

Thanks-I was pretty happy with that one too - coming from a farming background the extremist animal activist thing kind of blows me away. Have a good one Theresa. |

They do tend to get extreme don't they? I work in a middle school library and we are getting subscription offers to their magazine. |

I've never seen any magazines, but in the St. Paul area we have a public access television system, 3 or 4 channels that people can play whatever they want on. I've been disturbed to see PETA propaganda videos on at all hours of the day, they depict the worst aspects of dairy farming, slaughterhouses and factory farms- flagrant animal abuse that is the exception and not the rule. They portray it as if Dairy farmers are sadistic demons, it's just not the case. I remember helping my 75 year old (at the time) grandpa pull calves, if the animal didn't live he would still get choked up, even at that age. Farmers care for their livestock, they need each other and suggesting that people who keep and raise animals are evil, malevolent bastards just pisses me off. At any rate, showing shock value videos in a forum where small children and ignorant people can watch them and get the wrong end of the stick seems really irresponsible. Almost as bad as giving millions of dollars in Tobbacco settlement dollars to teenagers to blow on ludicrous anti-smoking commercials (i.e. Target Market commercials). Seems that money could have been better spent on cancer research or producing anti-smoking medical aids, I'm rambling--have a good one Theresa. Oh yeah, I love my cat and dog. And Venison. And my leather jacket. And hamburgers. |

Don't mean to start anything here, but in NC the tobacco settlement monies most recently were pulled from building a tobacco institute (YES - a tobacco institute!!) to bailing out the state budget deficit. Neither one of those being the original intended purpose!
Harumph!!!

And in Wisconsin, the same was done with the tobacco settlement money - bailed out the state budget. Not a penny went to doing anything about to cultural environment of smoking, nor it's medical effects on smokers.

Same thing in MN-state government is putting tobbacco money towards filling budget gaps. I don't understand how they can do that. Of course our new governor made a promise to a special interest group, "The Taxpayers League of MN", to not raise any taxes. This group is funded almost solely by a very few wealthy businessmen, who would be paying sizable chunks of tax money, though they claim to represent the whole of the citizens of MN. We pay some of the highest tax rates in the nation already, a little bit more isn't going to put a dent in the finances of the average citizen here. We've got a great standard of living so it's worth it. At any rate state government just passed the buck to local government which is having to raise individual property taxes. Funny how the governor can pass the burden on and claim that taxes aren't being raised. I don't think anyone is fooled. A property TAX is still a TAX. |

Moreover, a PROPERTY tax targets only a segment of the population. An income tax targets us all. Why put the burden for all services on only a segment of the population? Well, they did the same thing here in Wisconsin. Anyone wanna guess why? Two reasons: Republican assembly and Senate, democratic governor. That's number one. Number two is, most outlying counties and cities other than liberal Madison the state capitol are predominantly Republican. That a way, sleazy Dems can say not only did they NOT raise taxes, but that the REPUBLICANS raised them. And of course, it nicely fits in with Democratic redistribution of wealth notions. Do they really think they are fooling ANYBODY these days with that kinda political crap other than the terminally stupid and zombie party partisans? |

Only difference in MN was that we had a Republican Governor that passed the buck to the state's Republicrats. We're pretty divided politically right now even with our Democratic history -Mondale, Humphrey, etc... Perfect example is our US senators Democratic Sr. senator, Republican Jr. senator. I don't like either of them. Republican Norm Coleman is one of these guys that acts like he's responsible for the great economy of the 90's. "When I was mayor of capital city we had job growth for 8 years, we held the line on property taxes." No shit sherlock, you and everyone else in the nation. It's like these morons in California that think that their current state administration is solely responsible for the state's economic problems. So should the governors of the other 47 states and George Bush be recalled because they went from surplus to deficit? Give me a break, grow up people, things are tough all over. The technology bubble bursting, September 11th, shit happens. Deal with it. If you elect someone you don't like spend a few years getting good and pissed off, form good arguements, gather support and take the jerk out at the end of their term. Let people fail or give the chance to turn things around, don't cry over spilt milk. |
