William Barret Travis, a young lawyer, in his 20's, from South Carolina, was ill-prepared for the monumental task he had at hand. With only limited military experience, his rank of "Colonel" was more honorary than anything else. Seemed everyone was a colonel in the fledgling Texas Army. Yet, he faced the overwhelming odds he found himself staring at with a grim - and bold - determination. It is not often in life that someone, with all on the line, gets to practice what they preach. In his plea for assistance, Travis sets down the rules for exactly that ... and then, he lived it! In this most powerful letter, one of the truly moving documents of our storied past, Travis gets to say what everyone would love to be able to have the opportunity to say. They are not mere words - stirring though they are - for they foretold his destiny. It would not be long before "victory or death" would be at hand. Read this letter slowly ... savor every word ... it is the stuff of legend!
Commandancy of the Alamo Bexar, Feby. 24th 1836
To the People of Texas & all Americans in the world --
Fellow citizens & compatriots -- I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna -- I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannon- ade for 24 hours & have not lost a man -- The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken -- I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls -- I shall nev- er surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the Amer-- ican character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch -- The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his coun- try -- Victory or Death. William Barret Travis Lt. Col. Comdt.
P.S. The Lord is on our side -- When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn -- We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bush- els & got into the walls 20 or 30 heads of Beeves. Travis

I don't know why, exactly, I chose to use this on this fine morning, but I did. I guess The Alamo is in the air! This letter, to me, is one of the most stirring of all time ... the determined simplicity of it!
Anyway ... hope you all are in the midst of a fine Labor-less Weekend!
About Viruses and Spam and Such: As I think I've made clear, the past couple of weeks have been an absolute nightmare for me, as well as for countless others. My system is - I think - well protected against the evil likes of the Maguas of the Internet - spam, viruses, and other trickery. That is my foremost concern. I always upgrade & keep updated my "security suite." Still, things ran amok! They say the next round will be worse! Just so you know, if it is, we will probably shut down - at least our E-mail - and wait it out. I can't imagine going through that again.
Apparently, the spam-killer organizations out there are currently under attack from the spammers ... big-time stuff going on. Sickening. The Internet can be so enjoyable, and then these morons have to come along and screw the whole thing up! There oughtta be a law!
Along these lines - possibly related to all of this - I noticed, the past 2 days, or so, much mail being bounced back to me. So much so that I actually created a mailbox for all the undeliverable mail & set a filter to direct it there. Seems to have slacked off right now. Yesterday, I sent out a Board Newsletter to subscribers, and a 2004 Gatheri

Thanks for the plug Rich. Nice words. I am very pleased that you are happy with your rifle....very pleased.
This new series of the Tattoos and principle artist are GREAT! A really cool addition to all the rest of the information concerning LOTM already on the website. Thanks Mr. Principle Artist Man!!!
Where is everybody you ask? Betty and I are just hanging around going nowhere. Everybody else, I imagine, is taking full advantage of the last three day weekend before school, college, Fall hustle, colder weather, etc comes upon us.
To all Mohicanlanders I say ENJOY THE WEEKEND! And to our European friends I say the same! Who cares which nation's holiday it is - ANY opportunity to hoist a pint is a good 'nuff reason! Eh, Ilse? Right Adele? Cheers! |

Rich, I'm here...just lurking and contending with triple digit heat here in Arizona!
Glad to know that your woes are, at least for the time being, over. "Knock-on-wood", I was fortunate to escape this last battle of the bands.
The rifle is absolutely beautiful! I look forward to someday seeing it in person! Bill, you did a wonderful job!
Part 3 of the continuing series of reminisces from tattoo artist Rick Martinko, Tattoo Tantalizers. What can I say, it's GREAT! I look forward to every new installment! Thank you Rick, for your time and allowing us to join you in your experience!
Have a safe Labor Day weekend! and give a big hug to baby Sophia!

Well, I am definitely here! (Sometimes I worry that I am here, posting, too much! But that doesn't seem to stop me.)
The Letter... Wow. "I shall never surrender or retreat." These words are words for the ages. How many American soldiers, either before that time or since, have uttered or even thought those words? Countless.
The Virus... I'm glad that things are letting up, at least temporarily, for you. I am still getting several per day on my Yahoo account, but always in my Spam folder. So, apparently Yahoo is simply not able to stop them all.
The Tattoo Tantalizers... This is so-o-o-o great! I am thoroughly enjoying Rick's photos and commentary. Waiting with bated breath for the next installment. Does anyone know... Carter?... Does Mr. Studi frequent these boards at all? Perhaps he would enjoy seeing and reading Rick's pages. Perhaps someone should alert him?
Oh yeah... I surely do love that photo of Daniel! I'm snitching that one for sure!

Although I don't post as much as I have had in the past.....I am here lurking about. (Although not in triple digit heat - that was last week; back to the fog banks in the morning and evening) Great letter; watched the Davy Crockett & Daniel Boone thing last week on the history channel, I believe, Boone's section included a reference to LOTM and Davy's had the Alamo. The Tattoo section is great! Many old posts asked about those tattoos. Thanks for all your work as usual in bringing all of these interesting items to us AND dealing with that internet crap stuff.

Hi guys, I'm still here. I was often out of town this summer, so I only did some lurking and no posting. If my hotmail messages bounced, it may have been because I was frequently over my account limit. I'll keep my mailbox cleaned out now. For goodness sake, don't anyone worry about posting too much. That's impossible. Everything is so interesting and informative. I love the new tattoo pages. Thank you so much. And Daniel... SWOON!!!.

Rich,I agree.Travis's letter from the Alamo s the most courageous writing I've read. That is why I'm writing a novel on the Alamo...The Alamo I guess is a favorite subject of mine.
So far I've only gotten two infected emails....I only have one email account....which is my main one. |

Seems to me Travis could have made their plight sound a bit more desparate.
If I got that letter, I'd day: "Well, they seem to be doing fine for the moment. No rush." |
