Hopefully, I'm not still lost in the wilderness after this post. The orignal release is still my favorite. The director's cut was fantastic and I actively lobbied for it, but I hated the ending.
Glad to see the Board is still active. Lots of good times here. Still am amazed at what
Rich created here.

I have all of the versions of LOTM except the 1920 silent one, so I may have to get this one as well. I have often wondered if you could use a little software to merge the original and the DVD and get all the scenes into one copy. |

Nothing really separates this from the rest, Fitz. It's just that it is good to have the original release on DVD. The Definitive Cut left out Duncan's courier diversion scene. Otherwise, I may have chosen that. Ask me on another day, and I well may!! |

I can play DVDs from other regions on the computer, but I don't like doing it because the fan drowns out the dialogue sometimes. Can you or anyone here tell me how to set things up so other-region discs will play on my blu-ray player?

That would depend on how fanatical you are, I guess.  The Blue-ray version has obvious picture quality advantages. This version is the "Definitive Cut." It's kind of a mix between the original [VHS] and the Director's Cut [DVD]. It makes fans of BOTH unhappy. As for special features, there is Michael Mann's commentary and a "Making of .." featurette. Nothing too extraordinary. I have it, it's good, but my favorite is the Region 2 DVD [European version], if you can play it on your system. |

This question has probably been answered somewhere around here, but I don't have the time (or the know-how) to go about finding the answer...
Can anyone who has LOTM on Blu-Ray please tell me if there's enough difference between it and the Director's Expanded Edition to make it worth buying the Blu-Ray version (any special features or anything)?

I've read those links previously and there is nothing to prove there is a three hour cut. It is a rumour until proven otherwise directly from Mann's mouth. They showed the blu-ray cut of the movie which is about 114 minutes, not the three hour cut which most likely does not exist. |

I read that this May 2012, Michael Mann had another showing of the three-hour version of Last of the Mohicans for selected guest. My understanding from reading a reviewer at Amazon.com that there are three versions of Last of the Mohicans. The one actually shown in theaters was the best one and from what this reviewer stated, there were more scenes with Eric Schweig. The reviewer called the version shown in their San Diego theater the Promotionary(sp?) version. They said it was clear that there was a relationship going on between Uncas and Alice. In the one on DVD it is somewhat hidden or slightly suggested. Blink and one has missed it. When Uncas when to battle to save Alice, I first thought why doesn't he wait for his father and brother. When Alice jumped, I thought she was insane. Then I started reading forums and reviews and realized that there had been a relationship between them. For those of us who are dense, that relationship never existed in the Director's Cut. |

Theatrical cut! Because it's the first one I ever saw and can't get over the things missing from the director's dvd version. Although, I do agree with James that Heyward's Diversion is a great seenand would have been a great addition to the theatre version. |

I went with Theatrical (which I'm assuming was the same as the VHS version)... and that's solely on the quality of the storytelling, not the quality of the visuals, that goes to the blu-ray.
I'd actually vote for the Blu-Ray version as the best on this poll if they hadn't rearranged the Sachem scene at the end. It irks me that bad. It was beautifully edited in all the versions prior. |

Didn't the television airing incorporate both the original, theatrical release plus Duncan's diversion scene among other added scenes? If anyone caught it way back when it aired, please help me remember. I want to say it did! Although some of the more graphic parts were cut, I believe....

This is a little unfair since I haven't seen the Blu-Ray version, nor do I anticipate doing so. But I have to go with the "Director's Expanded Edition", since it includes the "Heyward's Diversion" scene, to such good advantage. And to invite the "slings and arrows", I always thought the deleted I Will Find You was BLAH anyway. ( Besides, I show up better in the Director's Expanded Edition! ) |

The VHS version is the one I fell in love with - though I have heard from others (Ros???) that it differs somewhat from the version shown in the theater. So I'm not sure if the two are considered one & the same, or not...???
That said, the DVD version wins "hands down" for making the film "pop" in terms of the visual improvements. However, I DON'T like the fact that scenes & lines that we loved were cut from the DVD!  As others have said here many times before, what ALL of us would love to see is the original release, PLUS the added scenes, in a DVD and/or Blu-Ray format. THAT would be a TRUE "director's EXPANDED edition," much like the re-release of "Dances with Wolves."
LOTM is still my favorite movie, in ANY format!  |

Director's expanded edition. Though I cannot get over it that Mann couldn't just add those extra scenes to the theatrical cut but had to cut scenes out of the TC. It would have been great without nothing cut out and those new scenes added. Although I must once again say that I wish we would see a true expanded edition. Every cut of this movie that we have is too compressed, too tight. The scenes could easily be expanded. Especially about the politics of the time... to make the movie more epic, more deep.
RICHFED: has the Mohican press ever tried contacting Mann, his agent, publicist, whoever about doing an interview? I don't see why he couldn't do it. Maybe he would be glad to do it. Just imagine if we could ask about scenes or dialogue that was filmed but cut out! And to hear what he thinks about doing a true expanded edition. |
