Posted - April 12 2004 : 5:37:01 PM When I bought LOTM on dvd I was so disappointed. I just figured that the dvd would have deleted scenes from the original script, in addition to added footage, you know, like most other dvd's that are on the market. I got the added footage but the dvd also deleted scenes that were in the original vhs version.
Why oh why couldn't they just get it right? Perhaps down the road there will be another version, perhaps a 20th anniversary cut which will include deleted scenes, bloopers, perhaps even a clip of the various love scences in the movie played to that stirring muscial score, somewhat of a musical video. The way they did with Grease, Dirty Dancing, and other films that have created a "following" of sorts. Perhaps it will even include an insert that will include things about the making of the movie that we don't already know about--I can dream, can't I? |

Posted - January 21 2004 : 11:32:17 PM This might seem obsessive, but to really compare the dvd and vhs start both at the same time and when you get to the differences, (of course you will have had to watch the VHS version ALOT to do this), pause the DVD, watch the VHS and then the DVD and so on. There were several clips and dialogue that is different. (I too was disappointed that "I will find you " was not on DVD, but there is extra footage during that segment)... The dialogue between Montcalm and Magua is longer on the DVD,,, both in the tent and out along the stream.. ok,, I really do have a life, just love this movie... |

Posted - January 13 2004 : 6:33:46 PM And, it should be noted, neither version - or even both combined - matches the script exactly. Scripts generally undergo a series of revisions that often continue right up into the actual shooting. So, the only script that might ever match up would be a TRANSscript of the completed film! |

Posted - January 13 2004 : 1:47:23 PM The vhs version is better, IMO. I have both vhs and dvd versions. The DVD has lines taken out with little adding to the story in their place (mostly scenery and the deletion of the song "I Will Find You"), and only some dialogue/action added (Duncan's Diversion and an extended Chingachgook speech at the end).
I've heard you can find the dvd cheap at Wal-Mart, so you could always pick it up for whenever you have an available dvd player or dvd drive on a computer. :) DVD players are coming way down in price, I got mine for $100 on sale about a year ago.

Left out of the DVD version .. to my regret....
quote: HAWKEYE: Yes. And "do not try to understand them. That is because they are a breed apart and they make no sense ..."
Also left out of the DVD ....and it shouldn't have been...
There is much to like about the DVD version.. I like "Duncan's Diversion" a lot...I wish that Unca's wounding before the arrival to the Fort would have been added..But there were some things left out of the DVD I'd love to put back in like those two quotes.... |
