Posted - May 15 2010 : 7:41:09 PM Hi All, I made a tour of some of the past gathering sites using Google Earth (ver 5) I uploaded it to the Google Earth Community Site Here's the link - Look for "Travel sites in North Carolina" posted on 5/13/10 by Ladybug798 http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1331862#Post1331862
If it doesn't play for you, you can email me and I'll send you the file. I'm still new at this. I think it's fun. I challenge you to check it out and see if I have the sites found and marked correctly.
You could edit the file and add more locations. I don't have the spot on the parkway where folks have watched the sunrise. There's other missing sites too. You'll need high speed internet, a strong computer with Google Earth installed. I tried to get it to zoom from the top of falls at Chimney Rock to the bottom, but it won't do it.. I wanted to simulate Alice and Uncas's fall. Some locations are a bit blurry while others are very clear. It's beyond my control. Remember you can pause the tour and zoom around yourself and then hit play to continue. Tell me what you think! See Ya'll next month.. Donna |

Posted - October 11 2010 : 10:46:43 PM Did anyone notice that the aerial images for Biltmore Estate were made on the very day the LOTM Gatherers were there.... June 18, 2008!!!!!!!!!!!! I looked all over for cars with red flags but couldn't find them. But... we were there. |

Posted - June 20 2010 : 09:09:40 AM Here's a couple of additions made to the Lake James area - noted with the red circles.
Donna's Google Earth Project - Lake James, NC - Fort site
I marked the scene of the Magua/Montcalm meeting of implied duplicity and the place where Hawkkye & Co. first see the Fort from afar after the George Road Ambush. You could mark the "Head for the River" cove, too.
Just one correction, I think ... memory is fuzzy on this, but I think the place where Duncan falls is a bit further to the right? Maybe? The spot you have marked looks more like the Canoe launch spot. Am I wrong? You could also mark the French camp on the road; maybe the burnt-out hull of the ship near the dock ramp, too!!! Fun!
Now, after this Gathering, you'll have to mark Cameron's Cabin and the Elk Hunt, Lady[Bug]!! - north of Asheville ...
Once again, nice job and a great idea!! The Trail never ends, does it!?! |

Posted - June 19 2010 : 3:40:35 PM Well, I can definitely see your project now, Donna - got a new computer!!!
This is a screen capture from my computer. The yellow push pin is my old house, where Elaine & the kids live. Directly north, not labelled in your project, is Masscre Valley - still in McDowell County, but south of Linville/Louise's. Maybe right around where the word "Fort" is.

Posted - May 23 2010 : 08:14:42 AM Tried it on my Laptop, Donna, and all went well. Google Earth used to work on my desktop, but after the past couple of automatic updates, it would crash my video card. My Pentium Quad processor on the laptop handles it with no troubles at all. Might be time for a new desktop.
No, Donna, I doubt I will be at this year's gathering. That event holds a lot of great memories for me, but it was time to let it go. Maybe one day I will explain - in depth - the sorry state of my life ...
But anyway, your Google Earth project was a great idea!! Nice! |

Posted - May 22 2010 : 11:11:18 AM Hi Rich, Yes, I went back in and updated the link to make it easier. Yesterday I downloaded the file from the link and I saw that the table rock part didn't play right. It's strange it played fine for me when I uploaded it to the site. I'm going to work on the file some more. I added the info that Stephanie gave me. I just have to tweak it some more and upload it again. Yes, it's too bad you have to have a strong computer to run it, otherwise more people could enjoy it. Will you be attending the gathering this year? Thanks, Donna |

Posted - May 22 2010 : 09:30:31 AM Pretty cool, Donna ... I'll have to try it on my newer laptop, as the video card on my nearly six-year old desktop can't handle Google Earth. Not in Direct X mode, anyhow, and the alternative is choppy & slow.
BTW, first time i tried to view your link, it took me to a listing of Google Earth links in a forum. I couldn't locate it a t a quick perusal. This time, it went straight there! |

Posted - May 18 2010 : 10:18:05 PM One more to add: the former Blue Ridge Motion Picture Studio is located very near the former SOTR site. Try 35 34 17.52 N 82 29 57.33W and that should put you in the parking lot we used. It should be south of the golf course.
I have checked out some of your locations... you went to a lot of trouble to put this together and it's GREAT! Thank you!

Posted - May 18 2010 : 10:08:38 PM Yeah if you look to the northwest of the red star in Cherokee, you'll see where someone has noted the Eternal Flame. That is part of the theater. Look to the left of the Oconaluftee Indian Village. |

Posted - May 18 2010 : 9:02:55 PM Hey Stephanie! Thanks for posting a reply. I can see many people have read my post. And, I know the file has been downloaded 19 times. But... I didn't know if people were enjoying it. I was hoping for more feedback. I'll do requests if people have any. I love making Google tours. I taught it to my kids in my after school class.
Can anyone find the outdoor theater in Cherokee where they perform "Unto These Hills"? I zoomed around but couldn't pin it down. Thanks, Donna |
