Posted - January 17 2010 : 8:39:23 PM With the harsh winter much of the nation has endured, it might be hard to envision June in Mohicanland, but it will be upon us before we know it. Mark your calendars now to attend the Great Mohican (Final?) Gathering 2010, which promises to be filled with fun, friends, movie scenes, and oh yeah, did I mention CHEAP?! The 2010 Gathering is absolutely recession-proof and your wallet will thank you. The itinerary leans heavily toward those movie sites which are free of charge (except for catering and the movie theater), so forget the stay-cation and join us in Mohicanland, June 18-20, 2010. Here is a rough outline of the itinerary so far:
Friday, June 18, 2010: Dupont State Forest, home to several waterfalls which appear in the movie. Hike the trails to the waterfalls and enjoy a catered BBQ dinner at the end of the day at the Triple Falls picnic shelter.
Saturday, June 19, 2010: A full day all over the place, including Asheville's Manor Inn (Webb's Headquarters), the Elk Hunt, possibly Cameron's Cabin site (*NEW* and tentative), raffles, Ariel's Auction, and the MOVIE on the big screen at the Colonial Theater in Canton, NC.
Sunday, June 20, 2010: Sunrise at Green Knob Overlook, Table Rock, Linville Falls, Lake James, and breakfast and lunch at Famous Louise's. If you've attended a Gathering before, you'll recognize this line-up. Sometimes it's best not to mess with perfection. :-)
Soldier #2 will be on -hand to reminisce and explain the filming at the various movie sites. And if you've been to a Gathering before, you already know that surprises occur and you never know who else might show up! Stay tuned here for future updates, and look for registration to officially begin in early February. At that time, the lodging announcement will be made (also looking fairly inexpensive). In the meantime, mark your calendars and ask the boss for vacation time in June! Stephanie |

Posted - January 19 2010 : 11:21:24 AM That's right I concur with Jayne and would like to extend my gratitude to Stephanie for arranging yet another Gathering.
Personally, Chimney Rock National Park will be sorely missed as it has always been a highlight I looked forward to visit and it was a great way to start off the festivities.

Posted - January 18 2010 : 2:44:39 PM Yay! The Gathering lives on another year! Thanks, Stephanie, for taking on the monumental task once again. Despite all those frustrating potential roadblocks (economy crash, no Chimney Rock, lodging mishaps, no Spirits on the River, etc., etc.,) you've managed to put together what looks to be 3 full and fun days!
Even though it's 6 months away, do be thinking about what you might be able to contribute to Ariel's auction. I'll post more on this later. I'm attempting to get in touch with Ariel's mom and can hopefully get some current news on Ariel and her family. With Karen's help, the auction will be up and running once again - full steam ahead!
Looking forward to seeing all those familiar faces and some new ones, too!

Posted - January 18 2010 : 09:22:58 AM Hey Caitlin! I wondered how long before someone asked about the absence of Chimney Rock on the Gathering itinerary for the first time ever. Since the last Gathering, the state has acquired Chimney Rock Park and is making some changes. Currently all upper trails leading to the falls are closed for a maintenance project that hasn't even begun yet and there is no tentative re-opening date as far as I know. Also, the elevator is closed indefinitely. Because the upper trails beyond the Chimney are closed, all movie sites are not accessible or even visible, so there really isn't any reason for us to go. Of course, the view from the Chimney is awesome, but without the movie sites I decided to skip it this time. It's kind of hard to imagine a Gathering without Chimney Rock Park, but it leaves us time to do other things instead. Glad to see someone was paying attention! :-) |
