Next weekend is the annual Fort Loudoun Colonial Trade Faire. It is one of the few French and Indian era sites in this area. The location is beautiful and on the site of the original fort. Plenty of merchants and events, and just a really great time. If you are anywhere near, you should take a look.

This is the South Carolina Independent Company (stationed at Fort Loudoun 1756-1760) who were also at Fort Necessity this year.

This turned out to be a good event. The weather was perfect and the ground had begun to dry out by Saturday. Lots of sutlers and performers. The battle was strictly for the spectators. I decided to do French Milice that weekend, but there were only a couple of others from the Fort Toulouse area, so they divided up who they had in to "British" and "Enemy" formations. There were enough in red so the everyone else was enemy. Even the SC Provincials were assigned to the attackers, something they were not particularly happy about. I thought their color of blue looked somewhat like a French Marine blue, and told them so, but it was not well received. So the "Enemy" unit consisted of Provincials, NJ Light Horse, 1st Maryland, French Milice, and Scottish backwoodsmen. Only one Cherokee took part, and he sided with the Anglais against his father, Onontio. But the Indian camp was very much in evidence below he fort. The fort is on a hillside with some trees on top. I pitched my tent beside the lake near the sutlers, but the camping in the trees was probably cooler. There is also camping inside the fort, if one wants to be that close to those who wear red.

Just wanted to say that I had plans to attend the trade fair at Fort Loudoun, but nobody that I know was planning to go... so I chickened out! Then I thought I would go to Painted Stone near Louisville, and at the last minute decided that I was too short on money, time and energy to go anywhere this weekend. Next year will be a good time to go, and I have heard a lot of good things about this event, so I won't want to miss it twice in a row! Sometimes I don't like to be a stranger in a strange place...
