Posted - September 21 2005 : 3:58:26 PM Has many of you know I volunteer with the Red Cross. So needless to say I have been VERY busy . I was first sent down to Miami (where Katrinia hit first) and spent 2 weeks there doing client cass work ( basically interview and hand out the aid in which the Red Cross is providing). I then headed home to help out at the Local Chapter. We have had over 100 families evacuate to our town. So that has overwelmed this areas chapter. Once every two months I am on call. (This means between the hours of 5 p.m and 9 a.m. all day Sat and Sun) I can be called up for a Local Disaster. (like a house fire). This week I am on call. Had a call last night, a family was seen living in their car. They had evacuted from Alabama and had no where to go. Spent last night helping them out.
Well with Rita building up speed and headed for land. I will be heading out next Monday or Tuesday to parts unknown. We (the Red Cross) are still dealing with the victims of the last hurricane. So much help is needed. I will be gone at least 2 to 3 weeks this go around.
Anything you can do to help is much appreciated. I am afraid it is about to get much worse.

I am heading to Alabama!!!!..I will be pulling out Early Thursday morning and flying into Montgomery. We have a temp HQ set up there for that reigon, not sure if I will remain at HQ or head out to service areas. I won't find that out until I get there. I will be gone for 2 weeks then I will head home. At first they were going to send me to National HQ....That's in D.C...... There is no fun in that when you live here LOL.... But then just has I was packing to leave I got the call to head south instead...
Theresa. might end up near you. I will get a day off sometime in that time period. Send me your phone number and If I am near you I will give you a ring. (LOL and where are you exactly) |

God Bless you and your colleagues. Be careful wherever you're sent. Those of us who can't go can keep digging in the ol' pocketbook. What we see on TV probably only scratches the surface to the real, usually silent, misery out there.
Keep us posted... |

Posted - September 22 2005 : 4:39:30 PM Oh Thank you so much for your kind words and well wishes. But that is not why I posted that. Several people have contacted me via Email, wondering what I had been up to. I know that I don't post here often, but I do read most all the posts..
With all that is going on in the U.S. right now, I just haven't been around as much.
Theresa to answer your question. The family has been put up at a Church camp in Christiansburg Va. The church has opened up their camp for anyone in need. The Red Cross Chapter in that area is running it. We don't have any shelters open in our area, most are here living with friends or relitives. For the few we do get we try and find living arrangements. The camp is better then the D.C. armory, a little more private and not so busy. But some have choosen to go there.(LOL lots of celebrity's have show up there ). I was glad to hear that you are safe, Marc and I were worried that it hit you some.
I will drop a quick note when I know when and where I am headed next. May God watch over those in the path of Rita. |

Posted - September 22 2005 : 07:27:19 AM Hey Cherie...about the family that evacuated from Alabama...there are many spaces available at our state parks here. Claude has been snowed under trying to get phone service to 500 campsites at Wind Creek State Park, which isn't to capacity yet. I would be interested in their story.
I helped our local Red Cross a couple of weeks ago. We had a one day bucket brigade and in my small town, we collected over $20,000.
God bless you and keep us updated. |
