Posted - March 19 2006 : 2:55:04 PM The latest issue of Premiere magazine lists the 100 greatest movie performances of all time (in the opinion of the magazine's staff). DDL appears at No. 11 (Christy Brown in "My Left Foot") and No. 53 (Bill the Butcher in "Gangs of New York"). No. 11 doesn't sound too bad, until you realize that No. 9 is Gene Wilder in "Young Frankenstein"!!!! I know people always disagree on polls like this, but good grief . . . .
You're probably wondering who was No. 1 -- Peter O'Toole as "Lawrence of Arabia." A great performance, but I wouldn't put it at No. 1. My choice(s): DDL in "My Left Foot," Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in "The Godfather," Parts I and II, or Denzel Washington as "Malcolm X." And I had to smile upon seeing that the most prominent of the numerous great performances shown on the cover is -- Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean" (very deservedly on the list at No. 79). Oh please let the sequel be good .... |

Posted - March 21 2006 : 2:49:43 PM That's messed up Gene Wilder being at #9 for Young Frankenstein and DDl at #11. His Christy Brown was excellent. To this day I wonder how he ever acted that way. When I first saw the movie and did not know who he was many years ago, I thought that the actor who portrayed Christy was really disabled. What were the staff smoking anyway when they thought up this list?? |
