One war movie I was really looking forward to was Windtalkers. I read the book several years back on the Navajo code talkers and it was captivating. Hollywood took an excellent story and turned it into a mediocre film. John Woo went completely overboard with the depiction of the horrors of war and Nicholas Cage phoned his part in. Adam Beach did an admirable job, just too bad the movie bombed. It would have made him well known.
Yep, could have been a good film. But the instant John Woo got involved, it went straight to the crapper. Nick Cage is equally awful in any thing he does. Too bad those two were involved. I won't touch anything with Woo or Cage, can't stand them at all. |

Posted - December 13 2003 : 09:53:18 AM I thought of another one I want to add: Dances With Wolves
Technically, it is not a "war" movie, yet it is about the war between the American Indians and the White Man and the horrible aggressive methods of the latter. Beautiful movie! It wrenches my heart everytime I watch it. |

Posted - December 12 2003 : 8:07:37 PM My own missing favorites are-as stated by Wilderness Woman- anything starring John Wayne, especially "Sands of Iwo Jima" and "The Longest Day". In addition: Patton Saving Private Ryan(I couldn't speak for an hour after leaving the theater) Glory Band of Brothers Twelve O'clock High Memphis Belle Last of the Mohicans The Patriot

Posted - December 12 2003 : 2:56:12 PM My personal favorites, not in any particular order, are as follows:
55 Days at Peeking The Rough Riders Gettysburg Zulu Zulu Dawn Frontier, Tales of the Old Northwest (Especially Volume #2) LOTM (All Screenplay Editions) The Charge of the Light Brigade (All Screenplay Editions) The Patriot The Crossing Unconquered (Classic DeMille) When the Forest Ran Red George Washington's First War The Sand Pebbles She Wore A Yellow Ribbon Lawrence of Arabia ("No prisoners, no prisoners!!!") Saving Private Ryan (Where Hollywood combat sounded like real combat) The Wind and the Lion (Not really a 'war movie', but great anyways) Gods and Generals (Good, but weak when compared to 'Gettysburg') Master and Commander
There are many others, but those are the ones that come to mind first and foremost.

Posted - December 12 2003 : 2:19:36 PM Gotta agree with Glory, Gettysburg and LOTM as I haven't seen most of the others.
I don't know if it really qualifies as a war movie, but there was the section where he was in Vietnam...Born on the Fourth of July.

Posted - December 12 2003 : 08:40:11 AM I have always loved the older WWII movies:
Tora, Tora, Tora From Here to Eternity To Hell and Back Midway Stalag 17 Any WWII movie with John Wayne in it!
But I have to say that the most realistic, the most moving and emotionally upsetting of them all has to be "Schindler's List." Words simply cannot describe...

Capitaine Conan (A French language film about elite French trench raiders in the Bulgaria area during the end of WWI) Das Boot Glory The Thin Red Line Ride With the Devil LOTM Henry V
I would also add to the list Band of Brothers the best WWII film in my opinion.
