Hi all,

I am new to this forum and I wasn't really sure where to post my question. I have one thing in common with all of you... I just love LOTM!!!! But I have a few questions concerning creating a period mohican kit so I hope that you guy's might be able to help me. My biggest problem, being from Belgium is that I need to find everything on-line and that isn't really easy.

To start with, where could I find some nice looking periodically correct deerskin leg breeches ( you know like the ones worn in the movie by uncas, chingachcook and nathaniel)

secondly I'm looking for a good place for some affordable sashes and leg garters/leg ties.

And last but not least I'm looking for a good place for hunting shirts, preferably like the ones used in LOTM.

Thx for the help to come,

Erik

Hows it going Eric, Its really good to hear that your are interested in Eastern Woodland History. As far as clothing goes, i agree that Cheryls book would be a good reference. But, What are you looking to do with the outfit? If it were for reenacting i would stick with the white trade shirt, wool breech clothe w/silk (makes it easy on the eyes) Wool or Leather leggings (I prefer Wool myslef) and leather/braintan mocs. As for the color of wool, i would stick with blue, or a french red. Sites like Historical trekking dot com might be useful, they have sutler links where you can order materials you might need.

I too am new to this board but have been reenacting for 20 years initially as a white settler with Indian influence, then 10 years as a CW doctor and then in the Indian world for 7 years, the first two as a White Indian and since 1998, full Indian as a Caughnawaga Mohawk from Quebec.I have only seen LOTM twice and would have to see it again to determine the correctness of the Indian clothing in order to respond to your query.I am sure that some on this board are more familiar with the clothing worn by the Indians.I enjoyed the movie even with it's departure from the book itself but the Indian gear including the rifle and especially the oversized war club wasn't viewed by the Indian reenactors with whom I talked with much enthusiasm as to its authenticity for the mid 18th century.Nevertheless there are a good many vendors who sell such gear.I can recommend "Indian Clothing Of The Great Lakes: 1740-1840" by Cheryl Hartman. This a pretty good book on Indian clothing of the Great Lakes which would cover the area{New York}in which the movie takes place. By and large it's correct except that center seam leggings weren't worn until about 1790.I talked to her several years ago and she agreed as to center seam leggings but I don't think she changed anything in the latest edition. If you need further help then post back and, assumimg I learn my way around this board, I will try to answer any questions.

I would look through the reenacting websites. They often list links to help the reenactor find clothing.

Then maybe try eBay.

Good Luck!

Eric,
I know this is probably no help to you but the reenactors that I know make thier own right down to the porcupine needles.
