What's going on here?

How does a guy[s] travel around with a high-powered rifle, show up in semi-crowded places, often in broad daylight, and fire a deadly shot ... and no one sees him???

What's his[their] game? How many are there? Is he[they] a skilled marksman? Why are the police, so far, seemingly powerless to catch him? What is the motive[s]? What about this cryptic public messages game the police are playing with him[them]?

Anybody have a thought? This story amazes me ...

As for being a "pro", he obviously was not. Trained yes, but not a professional. For one thing, his weapon, the Bushmaster Rifle is a poor clone of the Colt AR-15A2. If he wanted to do some serious shooting, he would have chose a caliber superior to 5.56mm NATO. A professional maksman would have opted for at least something chambered in 7.62mm NATO like the M-1A (Civilian copy of the M-14), an FN-FAL or HK-91. Now, does this mean that he and his partner were a couple of 'lone wolf' types, I don't know for sure. He may have received some of his funding from 'outside' sources, only time will tell.

Yes, maybe you should get a reward for the timely thread! I am going to start suspecting that you may be psychic!

I tend to agree ... seems like there might be more to come on this one ...

PS - Starting this thread almost coincided with their capture! Maybe we should get a reward?!?

Well, the ballistic test on the gun these two guys had was a match! It looks like they got the snipers! But I wonder ... do you think that it is the end of this story? I have a feeling that there is still more to this than meets the eye. What do you think?

My initial instinct is that this person is not operating in the name of a terrorist group or organisation, I am not sure why, maybe because I think they would have declared it by now. After all, publicity for his/her cause would be the motivator, would it not? I think it more likely that this is a quest for notoriety, possibly money, a brain game maybe...

As to how it can happen...well, more easily than we may have thought, obviously. If you think about how easy it is to conceal a weapon and find a suitable hiding place from which to scan crowds, fire, and then skulk away....in a busy town or city, surely that is not so difficult?

HM

PS I wonder whether this will have any effect on US citizens attitude to Gun Control....

The talk in Ottawa here is that it is probably a single person (male or female - there is a lot of debate about that point!), and is probably not really a firearm expert. Apparently the equipment this person has is so good that an average shooter could be making the shots the sniper is. The theory is that it is a serial murderer who likes to play games with the authorities - a zodiac killer type.

I hear you about the possibility that it is al Queda/bin laden related though. I am kind of leaning towards that theory myself.

It's awful funny that they are just outside the D.C. area. Are they sending a subtle message? They are making this homeland security thing look bad.

Hi, Rich,

I might be way off base here, but after about the 4th or 5th shooting, I asked my husband if he thought this guy might be a terrorist with ties to Al Qeida. Think about it: the government has been looking for & discovering small terrorist "cells" in this country since 9/11/01. These are men & women who immigrated here & appeared to become "model citizens" who lived here for years, went to work, got along well with their neighbors, belonged to the PTA, etc.

Bin Laden could have hundreds or even thousands of guys - and women, too - just like the Beltway Sniper, living & working among the general population of this country, & all they are waiting for is some sort of "signal" which would be their que to start picking off folks in the cities where they live. And not all members of these terrorist cells are from Bin Laden's country: let's not forget the "American Taliban" and others who believe as he did!

If this person (or persons) are not tied to Bin Laden & his gang, he/she/they are STILL a terrorist, by definition. Personally, I don't think they'll take the Sniper(s) alive.

What's just as bothersome to me is that there is already talk of a made-for-TV movie, based on the Sniper(s) and the events of the last couple of weeks! What are these people thinking?! The Sniper(s) feeds off of the media and all of the attention & now, some idiot wants to make a movie out of this, so that the Sniper(s) will get even more recognition??? I believe there's a law that says if this person is caught & convicted for these crimes, they will not be eligible to collect any "royalites" off of the sales of any books or movie tickets...but their families can collect the money! Something very wrong there...

Like I said, I may be way off base, but my way of thinking has changed a lot since 9/11/01. I never, ever imagined that something like that would ever happen on American soil, but it did. It's easy to make the assumption that the Sniper(s) has ties to some terrorist group somewhere.

Rich,it is hard to say what the motive is here. There have been other famous snipers in our history such as Charles Whitman,Oswald?and Joseph Paul Franklin. It is an effective means with which to kill someone, but I don't think he's a pro.Only time will tell.EM
