After a fierce battle Friday near Fort Carillon in the savage wilderness north of the colony of New York, the British forces suffered a near-fatal blow as Lord George Augustus Viscount Howe was shot & killed by a French sniper while leading his men on a reconnaissance mission in preparation for the assault on the French stronghold.
