Gettysburg Recommended Reading & Viewing
Gettysburg, by Lt. Frank A. Haskell, USA and Col. William C. Oates, CSA (Bantam Books) - Primary source material ... Haskell was in the thick of it at the copse of trees. Oates commanded the 15th Alabama (Law's Brigade) against Chamberlain (20th Maine) at Little Round Top. Gettysburg, Culp's Hill And Cemetery Hill, by Harry W. Pfanz (Chapel Hill) - Highly detailed account of battles for these hills. This book covers extremely well a less studied, rather neglected part of the battle. Excellent maps; An outstanding study of the prelude to Pickett's Charge. Gettysburg, A Journey in Time, , by William A. Frassanito (Charles Scribner's Sons) - Photographic tour of the battle, comparing original photos with present day views of the sites. Excellent description and analysis, along with pictures. The Gettysburg Campaign: A Study in Command, by Edwin B. Coddington (Charles Scribner's Sons) - The beginnings, the three day conflict, its aftermath ... all here, in detail. Possibly the best book on the overall subject. Gettysburg, The Second Day, by Harry W. Pfanz (Chapel Hill) - Although obviously does not cover Pickett's Charge, this is the most exhaustive, highly detailed account of Longstreet's Attack I know of. Outstanding maps, excellent footnotes. If you want detail, this is it. Lee and Longstreet at Gettysburg, by Glenn Tucker (Morningside Books) - Excellent analysis of leadership controversies concerning Lee/Longstreet. Includes: McLaws and the "Sunrise Attack" order, Cushing and Armistead, Pickett's missing report, Stuart's absence, more. Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant, by William Garrett Piston (University of Georgia Press) - James Longstreet could maybe have changed the tide of events at Gettysburg. A biography of one of the South's outstanding General Pickett's Charge, by George R. Stewart (Press of Morningside Bookshop) - Vivid, personalized account of the charge. As you read this book, you will feel as if you are in the Confederate Army, crossing the field into the pouring lead! Excellent! Robert E. Lee: A Biography, by Emory M. Thomas (W. W. Norton & Company) - A look inside this brilliant leader and sensitive human being who made perhaps his biggest blunder on the fields of Gettysburg. U.S. Army War College Guide to the Battle of Gettysburg, edited by Jay Luvaas and Harold W. Nelson (South Mountain Press) - Excellent guide for touring the battlefield; primary source writings describing events at each tour stop; pictures.
Gettysburg - Stars Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen, Sam Elliott, Jeff Daniels ... What can you say? The battle raged for three days. This film takes one key event from each day and stirringly brings it to life. The third day, of course, is Pickett's Charge. Partially filmed on the actual battlefield, with thousands of re-enactors, the images will haunt you. Almost like real life! Excellent characterizations as well.
