MohicanLand Musical Musings: The Music of The Last of the Mohicans

Randy Edelman was brought into the LOTM production at the last minute. In an excerpt of Randy Edelman's interview with Film Score Monthly in December 1996, Edelman noted that one of the benefits of coming in late in the game is, "if you don't have a lot of time, the director doesn't get a lot of time to screw with you. You give them a long time, and they'll want to putz around with you."

Edelman has written music for some of the big films in recent years, including Six Days, Seven Nights (1198), For Richer or Poorer (1997), Leave it to Beaver (1997), Anaconda (1997), Dragonheart (1996), The Indian in the Cupboard (1995), While You Were Sleeping (1195), The Mask (1994), Pontiac Moon (with Eric Schweig, 1994), Beethoven (1992) and Beethoven II (1994), Kindergarten Cop (1990), the miniseries Gettysburg (1003), and the TV series McGyver (in 1995, plus the theme). Edelman himself, as he noted in his Film Score Monthly interview, has been amazed at the success of some of the scores, noting that the score to Gettysburg was used to close the 1996 Olympics, and has been used elsewhere. He also noted in the interview that the music to LOTM was his "landmark" album: "Last of the Mohicans was a Platinum album", he said.

Before he become a leading soundtrack composer, Edelman took a turn in front of the camera, in the cast of the 1978 movie Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton.

Among the works included on the soundtrack, Edelman wrote:

"River Walk and Discovery"
"Pieces of a Story"
"The British Arrival"
"Cora"
"The Courier"
"Parley"
