AN OPEN LETTER TO MICHAEL MANN
~~~~ A CALL FOR A DIRECTOR'S CUT RELEASE OF THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS! ~~~~
Our package of letters, contributed by many of you, has been sent. For those of you who are new to this idea, below is the cover letter we sent with all of yours to Michael Mann. We'll leave it up here for future inspiration!
Our heartfelt thanks to both Joy & Myrrh for their contributions to this page.
Dear Mr. Mann:
Some five years ago film-goers were enthralled by the fast-paced action, intense romance and visual splendor of "The Last of the Mohicans."
Your 1992 film adaptation of Cooper's novel developed a loyal and persistent following, most evident now at the website dedicated to the film: "On the Trail of the Last of the Mohicans"  http://www.mohicanpress.com (we encourage you to visit!).
Developed in April, 1997, the website provides a popular forum for an ever-growing "family" of Mohican fans to discuss the movie's plot, the characters' motivations, the emotions the film engenders, and its historical backdrop. Several extras who
garnered small parts in the film have even contributed their personal reflections.
We write to you now to inquire if a "director's cut" of Mohicans was ever developed, and if not, to appeal to you to undertake such a project. There are many, many fans who would treasure owning an expanded version of this film if it were made available
for purchase.
Again, you need only peruse the aforementioned website to realize how quickly this contingent has grown, and to see that it may well be only a small representation of a much larger audience.
In our discussions of the film we've noted there seem to be a number of scenes that may have been filmed but later cut due to budget or timing constraints. For example, Uncas was wounded just prior to arriving at Fort William Henry (requiring Cora to
stitch him up), but we never see how that wound occurred. The original script also indicates that before leaving Cora by leaping into the falls, Hawkeye cut a lock of Cora's hair as a keepsake  this would be a most welcome addition to the story! There
are many such examples, bits and pieces Mohican lovers would love to see reinstated, if they do exist. We believe you could create a "director's cut" that would make this beautiful picture even more rich, while retaining the cinematic integrity you
originally instilled in it.
Attached are other letters like this, personal notes from individuals hoping to convince you of the widespread and deeply felt desire for an expanded version of "The Last of the Mohicans." The letters are worthy of your attention, if for no other reason
than to help you become aware of how your creation has deeply affected your viewing audience.
Thank you for what you've done thus far in creating an intensely moving, emotionally full and very beautiful film that has touched our lives and brought us all together in a meaningful common experience.
We truly appreciate your time and consideration.
