Poll Question:
I just watched LOTM again the other day (surprise, surprise), and something occurred to me.

I'm wondering: Does anyone think that the story could/would have ended differently if Duncan had translated Hawkeye's offer of his life literally? Chingachgook and Uncas were armed and looking on from a distance as Hawkeye entered the Huron village. They surely wouldn't just stand by and watch as he went to his death. Do you suppose--in a hypothetical world, where the script doesn't matter--that they could have had a plan to open up a serious can of whoop @$$ on the Hurons, and that Duncan's (albeit valiant) offer of his own life might just have fouled things up?

Interested to know your thoughts....

Choices:

Yes.
No.
Maybe so.
I conscientiously abstain.
Totally! This is the most brilliant question ever. You're a genius, RedFraggle.
No way! This is the stupidest question ever and you should stop posting, RedFraggle.

1. Ching and Unc were both armed with smoothbores and (at least in a Michael Mann world) could not have hit anyone at the range that Hawkeye did.

2. Two guys don't whoop up on 50 or so.

3. It's always more fun to torture, burn, scalp and kill Brits. Did I say scalp? They why didn't the Hurons scalp Duncan before burning him? Seems like an oversite. It is unlikely that a Huron would miss that good of an opportunity for a nice blond scalplock. Oh well . . .

I was my understanding that many more preferred to scalp "lay fran-say" since, due to the high pork-fat content, the scalps would just slide off...

Tis true that there were those benighted tribes that did on occasion
"lever un chevelure" from the French or Jesuits, but the Savauge noblis always preferred the clevelure de l'Anglois.

I voted maybe so for they certainly would have tried to do something had they seen Hawkeye being led off to be BBQ'd. I doubt they could have done much damage though other than to get themselves killed in the process. So Duncan Donuts did them all a favor by offering himself for the roast. We would not have wanted all of our 3 heroes getting killed in the Huron Village.

For the record Red, a good question to ponder.

Obi was that you who voted for the final option?????? Sounds like something a GEEZER would vote for.

Red,
It would definitely have turned out different, but I am thinking that it would have turned out for the worse. Probably everybody getting slaughtered, so I do believe that Duncan did a heroic deed and helped to save a few lives.
BTW, I voted for you being a genius.

Love,
Kay

Aw, thanks, Kaylynn! Now, who voted that I should stop posting?

(And as a P.S.: Those last two options were just for fun and because I wanted to have more choices than yes, no, and maybe.)

I did Yes because something would have changed. No matter what the ending would have been different.

There are easier things in life then trying to find a good guy..... Nailing jelly to a tree for example.

I believe that the Hurons had been planning to burn Alice and Cora. Since the LOTM script seems to preclude the scalping of those leading ladies, the Hurons had focused on burning folks with scalps intact. As such the opportunity with Duncan was "off the radar" so to speak.

We become what we think about.

I'm sorry DW. I just can't let you kill this thread. It'd be cruel to hand over that title. So to spare you, let me...
