Poll Question:
Should we? Or, shouldn't we?

As you know, there is a new version release of the software we use to operate the Mohican Board. A few points:
  • Upgrading will not cause any loss of posts, settings, etc.
  • It will cause loss of some of the features that I have added on: i.e. Polls, Events, Classifieds [temporarily, in most cases, as we wait for the new versions of these add-ons to be released]
  • It contains, already, many of the features that I have added-on in the base code: i.e. Quick Reply, Jump To Last Post, Topic Sorting, Sticky Topics
  • It is much faster & efficient, and much more secure
  • Some of the add-ons have already been released, meaning we can add them on right away: i.e. Avatars, Private Messages, Photo Album

So, what shall it be?

Results:
Yes, go ahead and do it.   [24%] 5 votes
Wait for more of the add-ons to be released.   [29%] 6 votes
No, don't do it.   [0%] 0 votes
No opinion - it's up to you.   [48%] 10 votes

Hi, Rich,

While I would hate to see the Board lose some of the current features (especially the polls), you did say that this would only be temporary, until the new versions of these add-ons are released, right? I feel that making the change to the new release of the software is really your decision: you're the brains behind this Board & I will continue to visit, navigate & post, in whatever format you provide!

Long live Mohicanland! Long live King Richfed!

Thanks, RSW!

As you may have noticed, I love toying with .... and adding to ... and upgrading this software. Same goes with my browser. Since I spend time on the Internet, I want my "experience" to be as good as the current improvements allow. After all, these upgrades are free, so why not take advantage of what they have to offer?

Anyway, all that said, the primary reason that I would want to upgrade this forum is for the increased security. Having been hacked 2 or 3 times in the past 5 and a half years, I can tell you that it is no fun!

BUT, I tend to be among those who have voted to hold off till more of the add-ons become available - yes, RSW, in most cases, there will be only a temporary wait. In particular, I want to wait for the Polls & the Events Calendar. I don't want to do without those two features here ...

So, anyway, I'm moving a Gathering-related poll back to the "featured poll" spot ... there's quite a battle raging there ...

Ok ... went ahead & did the upgrade. There are some, though not many, visual differences, but you will notice the improvements as you begin to more fully utilize the board.

I should note, that I am not yet finished, there are a few more things I need to do. PLUS, a slew of new features that I can add, little by little.

I think it's all working ok, but if you discover a bug, please let us know!

Gone, at least for now:

  • Forum Announcements - almost sure to return UPDATE: 11/27/02 - Developer announced [no pun intented] that he will NOT be redoing this. Someone else may take it on!
  • Happy Birthday - probably will return UPDATE: 11/27/02 - Done. Just waiting to see if there are any bugs before adding it here.
  • Gatherings Attended - I will try to figure that out, but it'll probably be awhile!

You'll notice improvements in the posting area, in the avatars, photo album, and elsewhere ... It'll take you a bit to realize what's better, but the layout, etc. remains intact so you shouldn't get confused!

The Events Calendar is MUCH different, the events showing up in the forums themselves, which I like ... so choose the appropriate forum for the Event [Holidays, for example, should be placed in the Birthdays, Congrats ... etc. Forum - for the most part]. Please repopulate the Events ... you'll notice that they are stripped bare.

Classifieds, too ... anything older than 60 days was deleted. NOW, though, they'll stay for a full year, unless you delete your ad sooner. You'll notice improvement there, as well.

If you get confused with anything, post the problem here, I'll help you out. Strongly recommend using Internet Explorer 5 or higher as your browser.

I love the smiles being right there to choose from ...

Anyway, thanks for your patience!

Have fun!

Hey Rich,

The only glich I'm experiencing so far is the "Jump to Last Post" not working for me. And, occassionally I'll get a "cannot find server" but when I refresh it will give me the page, so that's probably not a real problem.

"Jump to Last Post" will only work with posts made from this point on [though there is a little code work that can be done to change that. I'll put that in, probably, when I get a chance]. The refresh thing is probably a temporary connection problem ... not happening here.

Thanks, Theresa ...
