Journalists Get Sneak Peek At New 'Alamo'

SAN ANTONIO -- Members of the news media and employees of the Alamo got a sneak peak Thursday night of the new movie version of the historical battle for Texas Independence.
Argelia Atilano, a Los Angeles TV reporter, praised actor Dennis Quaid, who she said performed "a very drunk and smart Sam Houston." Atilano also gave high remarks to Jason Patric, for portraying "a very handsome and brave James Bowie."
But she said Billy Bob Thornton stole the show with his role of Davy Crockett.
"He was Davy Crockett, who in his day, always stole the show," Atilano added.
Atilano also said the portrayal of Mexican dictator Santa Anna, who was played by Mexican actor Emilio Echevarrias, was "very evil ... maybe a little too evil."
Cecilia Bogran, also a reporter from Los Angeles, agreed with Atilano's opinion of Santa Anna's portrayal in the movie.
"Santa Anna was a harsh man in reality," Bogran said, but she added that Echevarrias' performance was "a little caricaturish.
"I'm worried that 'The Alamo' will be a negative for the Mexicans who are here now."
KSAT 12 News anchor Ursula Pari, who also attended the viewing, said South Texans really owe it to themselves to view the movie to see what San Antonio and the Texas shrine was like in those days. Pari said the photography in the movie "will blow you away."

Okay, now I am chomping at the bit to see this movie. This sounds like it is going to be as good as "Master and Commander". But I do have a few comments concerning the reviews (Yeah I know, "No Sarge, not you."):

Ah yeah, dictators usually are. The benevolent ones were historically in short supply.

Of course he was Ms. Bogran, but you don't want reality to 'offend' people, do you? I got a news flash for Ms. Bogran, this country was built by people 'offending' each other, that is how you have open debate. It is also why the founding fathers did not list 'The right not to be offended' as one of the Constitution's Bill of Rights!

I wonder what Ms. Bogran means by this? When she refers to "the Mexicans who are here now", does she mean tourists or illegal aliens? Because the U.S. Citizens, who emmigrated legally from Mexico are not Mexicans, they are Americans.

| If the portrayal of Santa Anna is a little caricaturish, that will be disappointing, just as the portrayal of the Banastre Tarleton character was in The Patriot. (Hardly the only disappointment in The Patriot, but that's another matter.) As Mark Baker has said, it wasn't necessary for that character (Tavington, I think) to be portrayed as a Nazi war criminal. I'm no expert here, but I don't think Tarleton, bad as he was, ever locked a bunch of colonials inside a building and burned them to death. Much better for a movie, I think, if the bad guy is a realistic, three-dimensional character. Magua, anyone? Isn't it odd how criticizing another historical epic (or potentially criticizing, in this case) so often turns into praising LOTM??!!! |

Hundreds of reviews have been made and many,many newspapers claim that this film is excellent.All the extras who were invited,cast and crew...said the film was awesome and that the film very sad at points.They also said the cinematography (by the same guy who did dances with Wolves) was excellent!

I have eagerly been awaiting YOUR review of this much-anticipated movie! I have not gone to see it myself (yet), but I will.
But after the months of countdown, I'd like to know that it was all you had hoped, and more? (or not?  )
