Previous Update: 8-MONTH Gathering Update & Checklist
quote: originally received in an E-mail - 11/17/03 Who the heck has the nerve to ask people to send Russell and Pearl Means to the Mohican reunion in June????? If these people want to go, let them pay their own way,, I have heard it all now..This is awful and as much money as he is reported to have ,,it is awful to ask others to pay the Mean's way. I think i have about lost all respect for Russell Means. He needs to get it together. All this hype about the movies he makes and you have to run a movie several times to even find him.. Mohicans was his one shot. And I am willing to bet this site asking for money was put on here by one of his family . What happened to the Russell Means that cared about his people or was that hype also. Seems all he is interested in now is money, fame and how many young wives he can get..If he is this broke then Pearl is young enough to put out to work.STOP ASKING PEOPLE FOR MONEY,, Personal note to Russell, you need to do some soul searching. get back to what you used to be..Thank You
No name. All I can say is it came from AOL.
I just always figure that everything someone says is representative of others' thoughts, as well. The question is: How many? In this case, hopefully, just a very few.
Let me say regarding this that the writer completely misses the point. Russell & Pearl Means are invited guests of the 2004 Great Mohican Gathering. They didn't come groveling to our door begging to be allowed to come. We invited them and are paying their expenses. The Means are charging nothing for their appearance. It is the exact same deal we arranged with Wes Studi in 2001. Eric Schweig, in '99, was a somewhat different scenario, but trust me, he didn't come on his own expense. That's not how it works. These folks don't appear at the Gatherings by magic. It takes much tooth-pulling, coaxing, arranging, stress ... and then you get an E-mail like this one. JEEZ!
At any rate, we are now over the halfway mark in our fund-raising. We still need some help. Please, if you haven't already [and great thanks to those of you who have contributed/bought raffle tickets], buy some raffle tickets, send a contribution, or make a firm pledge NOW ... it would be ideal to have this wrapped up prior to opening up for registrations. Too much money to deal with all at once in too many directions. [Now I remember why I like so much smaller Gathering plans - as in 2002 - ] See: Coins For Chingachgook!
Speaking of registrations, we are merely one and a half months away from that point! Hard to believe! Hope you are ready!
Ok ... a review of what's been happening, day by day:
Day One - Chimney Rock Park/optional - Pisgah National Forest: Status Quo - Pretty much all set till we start collecting money and pay CRP. The only real question mark is who we may have speak under the pavilion, if anybody. At the moment, the plan is for John Evans to display his LOTM props collection.
Day Two - Linville Gorge: Status Quo
Day Three - Biltmore Estate/Spirits on the River: Again, just a matter of making payments after registration begins. The contract with Joanne Shenandoah is currently in her hands.

Rich, Might want to mention here that the money you are speaking about here does NOT include Lodging expenses. This is something that you must do on your own.
PLUG...... For the newbies... I will say that staying at the Geneva is the right way to go. I have done both. It is not the HILTON by any means. However, staying with the group is worth it. Believe me when I say that being able to follow along in a caravan to some of these (MOST ALL OF) locations is PRICELESS . There is many an evening when you will return and be really tired. It is nice to be able to go to the tiki bar to get a little something to eat before you passout for the night.
ALSO, we will have a room set up at the GENEVA where you will be able to see all the RAFFLE items and ARIELS CABIN items. I will be selling tickets for the raffle all week, with the drawing at the Mohican games. I will be in the room most of the afternoon of the 19th setting up. Please stop by and take a look around and drop off your donation!! I will be back in the room on the afternoon of the 20th. And I am sure I will be there off and on through out the week. |

Disregard the email. Person is clueless about how these things work, and just wanted to rant his disaffection for Russell Means. Your paying his travel, lodging and food expenses as a courtesy and so that his attendance is not at his own expense. So what? Even employers do that if they want you to come for an interview. And people like Russell Means and Wes Studi get pretty nice incentives commonly for speaking engagements......all celebrities do, NONE show up on their own tab with no incentive.......I'd say they are being quite nice to NOT expect additional "incentive" to sit with us and speak with us as they do. They could ask for it, but didn't. They are being generous with their time. He's missing the point, isn't he? They COME to your Gatherings. The see value in what you do, and think it something worthwhile to attend. You can be darn sure they don't respond to, let alone attend, every invitation they get.

I agree completely with Bill, Rich. Disregard the e-mail. Sounds like somebody out there has an individual bone to pick or chip on their shoulder and also has no experience in bringing in special guests, interviewees, guest speakers, etc. for anything. Just a shame YOU, Rich, had to receive the brunt of their particular bone-picking problem. Oh well... Christina

Well, I took it seriously in the sense that it was someone's opinion and made me wonder, a little, if some others might be under the same misconceptions.
I completely disregarded it in that it will in no way affect how we proceed with this. I am doing nothing wrong. We, as Gatherers, are doing nothing wrong, Russell & Pearl are doing nothing wrong ... in my opinion, it's a fair - and honest - deal all the way around.
Hey Cherie - thanks for clarifying. The Gathering Registration fees cover only what is described on the Gathering page - admission to CRP, plus 2 meals, admission to Biltmore, plus one meal, Joanne Shenandoah concert, all-day rafting trip, plus one meal, all admissions at Cherokee [museum, village, and outside drama, Unto These Hills], plus 2 meals, movie theater ticket, admission to Mohican Games [including live music] and the cookout, plus, "expert" guiding to all the film's locations [listed here, plus those at Dupont, Pisgah, Linville, etc.], Program Guide, name tags, caravan flags - souvenirs all - and all the extras, like Soldier #2, Russell Means, Tim Cordell, etc. etc. Did I forget anything?!? Oh, a small portion does go toward expenses, like ink for the printing, materials, etc.
We try to give you your money's worth!! |

If a person is not willing to sign their name to what they have written they are cowards and the email should be discarded. Not everyone agrees with Mr. Means' views but at least he is man enough to put his name to them.
Now, as for the gathering, my question is...can a person come for just part? I can't take a week away but would love to come for part of it. If so, what part of the trip is best for meeting all you lovely folks? |

Yes, of course! I love it when folks come for the whole shebang ... that's my goal - to have EVERYONE stay for the whole shebang - but, alas, it never happens.
Anyway, what's the best part? That's a matter of opinion ... I believe Saturday, the last day, would be the best day to meet everyone & hang out [Sunday, the first day, at CPR another good choice]. Plus, the movie is Friday night, so ... I guess I'd recommend the latter part of this particular Gathering. |

It occured to me, as I was trying to sleep, that I ought to explain why it is I "crave" Gatherers who last the whole Gathering long ...
The Gathering is a living entity. It gains energy & molds its personality as it moves along. In order to to that, it needs constants. If everyone was just popping in & out, it would lose much of its ability to shape & define itself - and become simply [not that it's bad!] a locations tour. By Gathering's end, those who tough out the whole thing, I believe, have entered another zone.
That said, I realize, especially this year with it being 7 days long, everyone can't manage that. As long as we have a solid core, it should work.
PS to Teri: Well said! |

And that zone would be....THE PAIN ZONE!
Word Up Girls and Guys! Talk about some incentive to take off a few pounds (in my case MORE than a few) after the Holidays! We all might want to request some good exercise or walking shoes for Christmas.
(Warning for new first time gatherers - EXTREME sarcasm follows!)
Master the StairMaster for an invigorating day at Chimney Rock and Table Rock. No access to a stairmaster? See me for suggestions of oxygen apparati ( Right, Claude?)
A couple of hours a day on the rowing machine should have you fit enough for the Nolichucky. WHAT? No rowing machine? I'm sure substituting about 300 push-ups per day should have you ready to tear into those rapids!
We have at least figured out how to avoid the Bataan Death March of the Dupont Forest (named courtesy of one Bill Rooks). Instead of one long seven mile hike it is now just three sets of two mile hikes. WOOOHOOO!
After initiating the above conditioning regimen..one needs only run 8-10 miles a day to prepare for the foot race at the Mohican Games. AND if at least 4 of those miles could be up a 45 degree grade, through cow patties and briars, you'll be in ship-shape for the entire week! One request of the games coordinator - could we have age categories for the race? NO? Well then could we possibly add a CHESS GAME!!!?
OK - OK! So I've exaggerated a WEEEEEEE bit! Seriously, although one may truly have a day or two of a few sore muscles, IT IS ALL WORTH IT, and there is something for everyone at each location!
Ohhh, gotta run to B&N - my new South Beach Diet book is in! Need to get that read by Dec. 26th!!!

Yup! If I CAN make it through the "death march" which was nobody's fault really, and was compelled due to restrictions on passages through the territory (or some such) that was unknown to anybody previous to the event.......and given they have gotten around those restrictions.......and that the places journeyed to were worth the effort even with the unscheduled trip to "Bataan"........
I think most anybody is in better shape than I was/am...so put on your hiking boots and DO IT! IT'S WORTH IT! |

"off time"? What's that? I plan to be there the entire week. Claude, on the other hand, will probably only be able to make it toward the end. (I'll take what I can get) Our 33rd Anniversary is June 25 and I can't think of a more fun way to spend it than watching the movie with all our Gathering buds...well, I CAN think of a more fun way but you all are not invited. |

Well, "Happy Anniversary" in advance, Theresa!!! Not to be "off topic" but my anniversary is in June as well! Now these LOTM games have me intrigued. Does everyone participate or is it optional? Since I am athletic the games sound like a lot of fun to me. But I would also like to see the site where Alice jumped, which (I think) comes at the beginning of the tour. Oh, what to do!? |

C'mere, little Katie, dear. A little closer ... I'll show you some stars!
Can't do that, actually, 'cause if'n I did, and accounted for all your old posts, you'd have more than me!!!
We had this little "problem" early on with the new board. So, at Teri's suggestion, we fixed it ... sort of. Couldn't do much about the stars, but we added a "Gatherings Attended" bit in the same area. Pretty cool, it was. Then, we upgraded the software - which uses a drastically different - to me, anyway - coding, and we lost it. Info is still in the database, but can't seem to call it up. Maybe some day. |

Well Honey, if'n you'd seen us "more mature" gathering women chasing the energetic little Maile (what was she 16?, 18?) around the cow pasture, you'd join in a more "seasoned" group fer sure - to keep from injurin' yerself! The "less mature", over zealous, "Ooops, I forgot I was over forty..." competitive side of the "used to be quite athletic" me overtook my sensibilities...and when I crumpled to a lump at the finish line I had almost popped a lung and about peed my britches! I had forgoten the last time I tried to RUN at a softball game, tripped over my widdle toe, landed chest first, 'bout scraped my ninnies off and tore a cruciate ligament in my knee. It was no consolation prize to hear my boss say..."Well, I see deploying your airbags didn't help much!!" Men can be such funny little guys!
Awww heck.....OK.....no need to make reference to age. How 'bout two disparate groups - Younguns and Not-so-Younguns? How'zat??

The Great Mohican footrace will be a fair contest under my new competition categories: 1) Maile and Nathan 2) Everyone else.
The "Nathan only" category will apply in hawk and knife throw competitions as well. No more wampum and brandy for that young'un! |
